Eight was not a fun age. I was being taught the 'manners' of this time period, and lordy lord was it a fucking hassle. An entire schedule was made for me which included my job as a nanny, my time to spend with the gang and my job as a barmaid. I had practically moved into the Shelby house and the room in the building was just for show at this point.

The manners I had to learn were not only sexist but definately to make us seem more... lively than most.

"...and if that happens, you pull out a gun and shoot." Finished Mammy Poll.

"At the dinner table?" I asked incredulously.

"At the dinner table." She confirmed with just as much confidence.

"But he didn't hear me when I told him two sugars. That was all. Why do we need to kill a man over that?" I was confusion and slightly terrified of what she would teach me next.

"Listen Jude, the Shelby family is not one to be looked down upon. The man didn't hear you meaning he wasn't listening closely enough. Oh but, keep your legs side by side, not crossed. Feet together. You must maintain proper posture." Mammy said with a shrug. I breathed in and out, trying to remind myself that this was a gangster family that I had joined. There had to be some sort of fucked up rules I had to abide by.

"You know, there's been so much talk about guns, yet I haven't even held on yet. How am I supposed to shoot such bastards in the head if I don't know how?" I reasoned, trying to get to the exciting part. She smiled.

"You know I sometimes really doubt whether you and Tommy are related or not. He was the damn same. Come on, kid, let me show you the ropes." She lead me out to the streets and we went to a barren field. She pulled out a gun from her garters under her skirts and I watched in awe.

"We're women. Better make use of it." She smirked. I let out a laugh of disbelief.

"You are the best Mammy I've ever had." I squealed. She ruffled my hair.

"I'm the only Mammy you've ever had."

No. I had another one. She just wasn't as kind as you.

"Let's not focus on the specifics." I giggled. She shook her head, smiling a little.

"Okay so you stand like this..."
