"You don't look so good." You state bluntly as the young coven head walks through the door of his room. His head snaps toward you in surprise, and he drops the cloak that was draped over his arm.
"Care to explain why you just show up like this?" Hunter asks, ruffling his hair in frustration. He's become used to you appearing out of the blue, even though it's technically very dangerous for you and probably illegal.
"Eh. Explaining something takes the fun out of it." You reply with a shrug. "Anyway, you only scowl like that when you're trying to hide how sad you are."
"I'm fine." Hunter replies, turning away to pick up his cloak.
"What happened, Hunter?"
Hunter throws his cloak at you, hitting you in the face. You pull the cloak away and hold it in your hands gently, noticing little purple stains. You turn to look at your boyfriend, who isn't facing you. His shoulders are shaking and you can hear shallow breaths.
Putting the cloak down on Hunter's bed, you stand and walk toward the silently crying boy. "I'm going to hug you, alright?" You ask gently.
Once you receive a nod from Hunter, you slowly wrap your arms around your boyfriend and rest your head on his shoulder.
"I thought I could help." Hunter whispers. "I-I really did. I found Titan Blood! I-in the portal key! But my uncle just... told me to leave. I tried, I r-really did. I d-did."
You can tell Hunter's really starting to lose it if he repeats things as if to convince himself what he's saying is true.
"Hey, hey. Shh, calm down." You say soothingly. "Take a few deep breaths. Let it out. It's ok to cry."
You think back to what your mother and Amity told you about the mission to Eclipse Lake for Titan Blood earlier today. Hunter, allegedly, tried to dig his own grave. You wish you'd been there to talk him out of it, but you had been blissfully chilling with the Blight twins at the time of the disaster. Thinking of how you could have helped your boyfriend if only you were there with him makes you sick.
"Amity told me you tried to, uh... dig a grave for yourself at Eclipse Lake." You start awkwardly, hoping to get some explanation from the crying boy.
"There was no Titan Blood. I knew Uncle Belos would be so angry if I came back empty-handed. I couldn't fail again. I can't be replaced."
"So you were ready to just lay down and die? Hunter, you don't have to live like this!" You guide Hunter over to his bed and sit him down, then kneel in front of him and look into his empty, tear-filled eyes. You take his hands and give them a gentle squeeze. "You don't have to live like this." You emphasize. "Come live with me, in the Owl House. My mom would love to have you with us. I'm sure Luz would really love to teach you about glyphs. And King, despite what happened earlier, actually likes you." You don't mention that 'like' may be a stretch.
Hunter drags his eyes away from yours with a shaky breath and pulls his hands away. "I can't. My Uncle would kill me."
You stay quiet, knowing all too well that Hunter is being literal.
The crying boy starts to fiddle with his hands, which you know he always does when he's trying to find something else to do or somewhere else to look. Finally, his tone the most heart-crushingly sad it's ever been, he asks, "Why do you put up with me?"
You stand and look down at Hunter, who glances up to meet your eyes before looking back down sadly at his gloved hands. You put a hand on either of his shoulders and say simply, "I don't."
Hunter looks up to meet your eyes, stunned and you sit down next to him. "I don't 'put up with you'. I date you and hang out with you because I love you and care about you and trust you. I don't just 'put up with you', Hunter. I value your company and presence in my life."
"You're the only person who seems too. Everyone else hates me."
You're stunned at the bluntness of his sentence. You shake your head and lean against Hunter. "Hey, that is not true. Luz doesn't hate you. My mom doesn't hate you. Darius doesn't hate you. Raine doesn't hate you. Eber doesn't hate you. There, see? You have, what, six people right there who don't hate you? And I know for sure that there's even more."
"Ok. Sure."
"I'm serious! We don't hate you. There will always be people who don't like you, but what you've gotta do is find the ones who do."
Hunter swipes at his face and looks over at you, smiling a tearful yet somewhat happy smile. "Found one."
You lean over and kiss your boyfriend, then pull away and give him a hug. He hugs back and whispers into your ear, "No more graves, promise. If I ever feel like that again, I'll tell you. I love you."
"I love you too. Thank you for trusting me."
