BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEE—

Your hand shot out from under the blankets, grabbing your phone and hurling it across the room. The alarm continued its relentless blare. This was the second time you'd snoozed it, and clearly, you weren't going to get away with it again.

"M/N, STOP THROWING YOUR PHONE! YOU'RE GOING TO BE LATE FOR YOUR FIRST DAY!" your mom's voice bellowed from downstairs.

Contrary to what this might sound like, this wasn't some cliché story of a new kid moving to Japan. You'd lived here your whole life.

The only reason you were going to PK Academy now was because your mom thought it would provide a better education—something about raising your chances of getting into law school.

She had her heart set on you becoming a top student, but that was a worry for another day.

For now, you groaned into your pillow, trying to muffle out both your mom's yelling and the incessant alarm.

"IF YOU DON'T GET UP, I SWEAR I'LL GET THE BELT!" came her final warning.

That was all it took. You shot out of bed, fumbling to get into your uniform as fast as humanly possible.

Your feet barely touched the stairs as you raced down them, your mother waiting in the kitchen, her eyes glued to her phone.

"See? I'm up, Mama!" you announced with a smile that didn't quite reach your eyes.

"Mhmm," she muttered, still scrolling through recipes or whatever it was that had her so captivated. "Your lunch is in the freezer. Don't forget to say goodbye to Nona and your father."

You nodded, grabbing the lunch from the freezer with one hand as you struggled to slip on your shoes with the other.

"I won't forget! Bye, Mama!" you said quickly, planting a hasty kiss on her cheek before darting into the living room.

"Goodbye, Nona!" you called, wrapping your arms around your grandmother, who was seated comfortably in her favorite chair.

"Have a good day, bubba," she said with a warm smile, patting your back softly.

Her gentle words always managed to calm you, even on a hectic morning like this. As you turned to leave, your eyes landed on the small memorial table, your father's photograph smiling back at you from among the offerings.

"Bye, Papa," you whispered, a familiar ache tightening in your chest as you gave a quick bow.

Just as your hand reached for the doorknob, a sudden realization hit you. "Damn it, I forgot my phone and keys!"

Running had never been your strong suit, but today you had no choice. You sprinted down the street, the thought of being late to school fueling your every step.

"Why hasn't anyone invented flying yet? I'd give anything to soar through the sky and avoid this madness!" you panted, taking a moment to catch your breath.

You slowed to a stop, feeling the burn in your legs. "I am not cut out for this!" you exclaimed, causing a few people passing by to glance in your direction. Ignoring their looks, you took a final deep breath and pushed on.

After what felt like forever, PK Academy finally came into view. At the entrance, a man in a sharp red uniform was barking orders, nitpicking at students whose uniforms weren't tucked in properly.
