"See, Saiki, helping someone isn't that bad," you teased.

"Yes, it is," he replied flatly.

"You're being overdramatic..."

"Have you seen overdramatic?" Saiki said, glancing towards his parents, who were now fast asleep on the couch.

"Fair point." You chuckled. "So I guess I owe you coffee jelly the next time we go somewhere, huh?"

Saiki's head nodded rapidly in agreement, causing you to giggle. "Thanks again for helping me and for staying over."

Just as you were about to leave, your phone rang. The name on the screen made your heart skip a beat—Mom.

Letting out a soft gasp, you rushed outside. "Bye, Saiki!" you called over your shoulder, waving as you answered the call.

Your mother's voice filled your ear, a sigh of relief escaping her.

"Oh, I was just checking on you. Where are you? Nona made food, and you show no respect by not coming home on time. Ungrateful..." she muttered that last part, as if you couldn't hear it.

Your heart sank.

"Haru ate the last of the tamales and rice, and Tao finished off the leftovers. So you'll have to make your own food. Sorry you missed it. Next time, you'd better not be late."

"Of course, Mama. I'm so sorry."

"You better be. Now get home quick."

Your hands trembled as you ended the call, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to fall. She hadn't even thought about saving you a plate.

You wiped at your eyes, catching the tears before they could spill over, and started making your way home.

A heavy feeling settled in your chest. You're crying because she didn't think of you when they ate. I guess it's my fault for staying out so late... but she could've saved me something.

You knew your mother didn't hate you—she just wasn't in the best place mentally, still grieving after your father's death. It didn't make it hurt any less, though, knowing she took it out on you.

The walk back to your house wasn't far from Saiki's—only about eight minutes.

As you strolled, you found yourself mindlessly scrolling through TikTok, trying to distract yourself. Time passed quickly, and before you knew it, you were standing in front of your two-story home.

Opening the door, you spotted Nona asleep on the couch. A soft smile crossed your face as you draped a blanket over your 82-year-old grandmother, making sure she was comfortable. At least she was peaceful.

Walking upstairs to your room, you noticed the door wide open. Cautiously stepping inside, you spotted your younger sister, Tao, fast asleep on your soft grey bean bag.

Rolling your eyes with a soft smile, you gently scooped her up and tucked her under the surprisingly warm covers of your bed.

She shifted slightly but didn't wake, still in her dreamworld.

With a sigh, you headed over to your closet, pulling out your usual sleepwear—an oversized t-shirt and shorts.

You knew how Tao was when she slept—constantly kicking and tossing around—so the bean bag would have to do for tonight.
