THE CHAT WITH the funeral home had gone as well as expected. Unbearably painful and excruciatingly difficult to talk about. She had managed to choose out a few good things though, such as a mahogany coffin, marigold arrangements and a plot in the graveyard that always had the sun shining down on it. Sure, Elena still had to choose out a headstone and something to engrave on it, but this was a good start. She didn't want to overwhelm herself. She'd take it a little bit at a time.

It was dark out, the sun had set a few hours earlier and the temperature was dropping rapidly. Elena would have called a cab, but it was only a fifteen minute walk back to her apartment and she didn't really want to get in the car, only for it to be two minutes. That would be a pretty embarrassing conversation to have with the cabbie. She buttoned her coat up all the way, wishing that she'd brought a scarf to warm her neck. God, she hated the New York winters.

In fact, she hated New York nights in general. Elena would never admit it, but she was extremely paranoid. She carried pepper spray with her everywhere she went, and if she had the time (which she now did) she fully intended to invest in self defence classes wherever they were taught. She didn't want to come across that man in the mask, and despite Karen's insistence that he was on their side, she still didn't want to get on the wrong side of him.

Around her, all she could hear were the faint sounds of music from within the various bars that were just opening and the cafés that were closing. She was tempted to go and get a coffee, but she didn't really want to stay out for longer than she had to. It was cold and it was dark. Those reasons were enough for her to desire the warmth and cosy lighting of her apartment.
