Oscar's pov *flashback to 2 years ago*
Today was the day that changed everything.
There was absolutely no going back.
The thing is.... i didn't know it was going to change my entire life for the worst.
"Hey cuz." Santí dapped me up as soon as he stepped into the backyard where the rest was.
"Hey." i smiled back at him.
"Do you know Evie Lopez?" he smirked at me as i raised a brow. Why was he bringing her up? And why would he ask that? Of course i knew Evie Lopez. I've been in love with her ever since 2nd grade. He knew that.
"Yeah. What about her?"
"She's in juvie." He chuckled as if it was funny. I felt my heart drop down to my stomach.
"Juvie? Why?"
Evette Lopez was best friends with my cousin. For a while i thought they were more than friends but Santí wouldn't do me like that, plus she was never interested in him like that. In fact, i don't think she was interested in anybody.
Evie was that kind of girl who loved to play the field. She was a flirt, but you will never see her dating a guy. Trust me, the boys at Freeridge High have tried their luck.
I never tried to get at her either, I was afraid i wouldn't be enough.
Evette's not a girl that comes in your life and stays. Shes complicated. She has layers to her that nobody has ever seen. She's hard to read and she does it on purpose. She doesn't want to be read.
I've always liked her for that reason. She was complicated and she was okay with that. It made me feel okay with being complicated too.
Since she's best friends with my cousin we know each other. We weren't super close but my cousin is the reason Evette knows me. She intimidates the hell out of me and she knows that. Im not good with girls, not like Santí.
He just shook his head. "Long story."
It always is.
Santiago and i were inseparable from the start. Our dad's are brothers. Growing up they ran the Santos together. Which means that we were involved into this life early on. Between Santiago and I, I wasnt made for this life. Santí loved danger, the idea of violence excited him. He loved to protect his own. I did too but i wasn't really into violence and making those sacrifices.
