Back to school- Maya's POV

"Maya, bring your ass down here or imma go lay down and you'll miss school today. Try me!" My mom yells from downstairs.

I know what your thinking.

"She talks to you like that?"

Well yes, yes she does and she will leave me if I don't walk out my bedroom in a few minutes. I've tried her plenty times to see if she would actually do that.

Let's just say, she's not a liar.

I look over my outfit one good time before putting my hand on the doorknob. I have on a long sleeve white tee that's basically a crop top but I tuck it into my dark black jeans. I have on some black and white Nike forces for shoes. I look at my half up half down goddess box braids hairstyle with content.

Box braids are just a comfort hairstyle for me. It's expensive as hell, but I don't have to touch my head for weeks.

After my quick glance over, I quickly grab my phone off the stand and walk downstairs grabbing my bookbag. When I passed through the kitchen my mom wasn't in there. She is either already in the car or back in her bed. I hope she is just sitting in the car. The last thing I want is a tardy or worse an absence.

I hate having to miss school.

I lock the front door and hop into the BMW SUV. I get questions all the time from people at my high school about what my mom does for a living.

As of right now, my mom doesn't work. She's a stay at home mom technically. The most she ever does is attend church on Sundays, which she fakes sick for most of the year except major holidays.

My dad works as an accountant for this big bank. He works with clients like the mayor and state officials.

Most of the kids think that I am privileged and stuck up so they don't speak to me. I may be more reserved, but everyone that talks with me knows I'm easy to get along with and never flaunt anything.

After zoning out for a while, I catch myself back in the present with my mom listening to "Trap Queen".

I look through my snapchat and see what everyone else is doing this morning. I see Destiny posted a quote this morning.

"I could never trip off a nigga if I had him."

"Which one?" I say in my head and laugh to myself and notice that the car is slowing down as we arrive to my school.

South Central High School.

I exit the white car muttering a "see you later" to my mom as I shut the car door. I get nothing in return except a car speeding off in the background.

Coming back to school after Fall break just isn't it. It's like we are all counting down the days until we get out for Thanksgiving and Christmas break. What makes things worse is that we are Seniors, so this is the last year for us to enjoy school before we all separate for college.

I walk into the school on time as the bell rings and go to Coach Clayton's classroom since I have to take Health first period this semester. Destiny and Imani take this class with me.

I usually try to find a seat all the way in the front if it's individual seating. However when I'm in classes with my friends,  I make it my priority to sit by them just in case there is an occasion where they may need help on some tests.

I see Destiny in a middle seat not too far from the front, but she's surrounded by jocks. I decide sit in the seat that's in front of her.

"Hey girl" she says smiling and noticing my presence, which breaks up her conversation with the jocks.
