Toph decided that this Earth Kingdom village was the best she'd ever visited. It had nice people, great places to eat, and a nice Inn. It might've had something to do with Sokka, though. Her face felt hot just thinking about him, and she found herself doing that a lot, lately. She just couldn't help herself. The way he had kissed her, his hands tangled in her hair, and the way they'd accidentally fallen asleep together in a loving embrace. It'd been a week since they'd arrived at the village, and he hadn't kissed her since. She was beginning to think that he didn't want her anymore. He didn't even hold her hand, and it was like he was avoiding her.
Scolding herself for allowing her mind to drift off, she returned it to the conversation playing out beside her.
"...couldn't have just walked out! All I'm saying is that I think Ozai had some help in his escape."
"I don't know, Sokka. Maybe-"
"Come on, Aang! Use your Avatar brain. If you lost your bending, and you were known for concocting evil plans, would you break out of the most secure prison in world on your own, or would get your loyal subjects to do it for you?" Toph felt Sokka cross his arms. She knew what she would do: kick all of the guards butts and escape on her own, but Ozai was a different person, and he was very evil.
Chiming in, she stood behind him," I agree with Sokka. Just think about it Aang. It makes perfect sense."
"Alright, I guess you're right... I'll think about it," Aang grumpily scooted his chair back and rose from his place at the table. He stomped out of the room, his arms crossed, grumbling to himself.
"Well, he's being childish," Toph rolled her unseeing eyes.
Rubbing the back of his neck, Sokka answered nervously," Yeah..."
The two lovers sat awkwardly, both of them unwilling to move. Toph was still confused about why he was avoiding her. She guessed he would've gotten up and left her there, but he stayed. She'd never felt this way before, like her heart was going to explode, and she had Sokka to blame for that. He made her feel elated, but now she felt deflated, like she always felt before he'd confessed his feelings for her. Why was he acting this way now?
"I uh... need to sharpen my boomerang," he got up and was halfway down the hall before Toph answered.
"Fine. Do what you want, you always do. Just leave me here!" The last part was shouted so that he could hear.
"What do you mean?!" he shouted back.
"I thought you liked me! You only kissed me because you were upset about Suki leaving you. Well, here's the thing, Sokka: you can't go around kissing people and then forgetting about them. Life doesn't work that way," she was breathing hard now. Sokka had come back into the room and was standing before her.
"I didn't forget about you," he spoke softly," I was giving you time."
"Giving me time...?"
"I know you've never done anything like this before, so I thought maybe you need some time to get used to it."
"Well, I didn't, so you can t-" before she could finish her sentence, her lips were engulfed in a firery kiss. That was the second time he'd surprised her with affection, and like last time she melted into him, fully embracing the kiss.
