We slowly enter the house, Fhan leading the way. It's a small one room house with a single bed and some drawers and chests.
"Grandma!" Fhan runs to his grandmother's side. She weakly pet his head.
"Fhan? Where have you been?"
"Grandma these are the strangers I told you about! They helped me make poti- medicine! This medicine can heal you!"
Fhan's grandmother looks very ill as she lays in the bed completely still, her eyes closed. The wrinkles and her white hair show how old she actually is. Her skin looks rough.
"Grandma please drink this! You'll feel way better!" He pulls out the cork of the potion, putting it in front of his grandmother's face.
"Ehh." She sits up and acknowledges me and the brute with he eyes almost completely closed. "Hello. You two must be the two strangers Fhan has told me about. I don't know what trouble he got you boys into, but thank you for watching him while I rested." She coughs.
I really feel bad for her. Her movements are so slow even when she does moves. She looks fragile and vulnerable to death. "No problems at all! We just wanted to help..."
"My name is Meleniah."
"My name is Y/n and his name is..." I look at the brute. "H-his name is....erm...it's O-Oslac..." The brute is shocked, but then smiles shyly.
"Nice to meet you Y/n and Oslac." She weakly smiles.
"We made this medicine for you. We hope you'll drink it and feel better." Meleniah looks back to Fhan, who now has a weary expression.
"Are you sure this will work?"
"We worked very hard to make these, so we really do hope they work."
"Alright..." She slowly takes the potion from Fhan's hand, putting the bottle to her lips before pouring it in. She finishes the entire bottle, and Fhan quickly wipes her lips with a towel. "I-its sweet...I-I feel stronger..." She stands up. "I-I think it worked! Thank you so mu-" She coughs violently, falling back onto the bed. I wince. "It...I'm still sick..." She looks at her hands with a sigh, her frail body slightly shaking. I feel the room get colder. "T-thank you for trying. I should get some rest now."
Fhan guides us outside with a sigh. Fhan looks upset. "I'm sorry Fhan. I think I know why that didn't work." He looks to me with a defeated expression as I kneel down to his level.
I pull out one of my daggers, cutting the skin on my arm. Blood seeps out.
"Y-you see...regeneration potions...agh...t-they heal damages on the outside of your body but not illnesses..." I pull out a regen potion, quickly chugging it down. We all watch as new clean skin appears where the cut was.
"N-no! No no no! What am I gonna do now?! How am I gonna heal my grandma?!"
"Fhan please calm down..." The other villagers watch our every step.
"This is not fair!" He runs down the dirt path, crying in anger.
"Fhan! We can figure out another way! Come back!" The brute places a hand on my shoulder with an exhale.
I sigh as we walk out of the village with our heads down. The brute has his intimidating stoic face on again. I feel sad. I wanna see Fhan smile again. I really wished that potion worked. What are we gonna do now? There has to be a way to heal Meleniah. When we make it home, I set my bag down on the table.
"Do you like that name? Oslac?" I sit on the bed, looking outside as the wind lightly brushes the trees.
The brute smiles and nods.
"Then you're name is Oslac now!" I pet his head with a smile.
Suddenly the brute sniffs something in the air. He sits up wide eyed as he grabs my bag on the table. He brings it to me and reaches into it, pulling out the golden apples. Oslac oinks as he hands me the golden apples with a big excited smile. He stands up and runs to the bookshelf, pulling out a very specific book before flipping through it and handing it to me. The golden apple. A rare fruit said to be made of gold. It's taste can be described as sour but very sweet. Unimaginable regerative abilities. Can cure illnesses! My eyes light up as I jump to my feet, holding the apples.
"Oh my goodness! This is the cure! This can cure Meleniah!" I hug his head, holding it close to my chest. "You did it! You figured out the cure I can't believe it! We're actually gonna help someone!" The brute melts in my arms before I release him. "Lets make a golden apple pie!"
We get to work, cutting up one of the apples to make into a delicious pie. When we pull it out of the oven, a heavenly smell enters our noses.
"Lets go go go!" I grab my bag as the brute carries the pie.
We run out of the house and back to the village. The sky is slightly darker now. While running through the village, people quickly move out of the way. We enter Fhan's home to find him huddled up next to his grandmother's bed.
"Fhan!" The child stands up to hug me.
"I'm sorry for running off like that..."
"It's okay. You worked so hard to help your grandma, just for it to not work in the end..." I pat his head.
The brute stands behind me with the pie. Meleniah slowly sits up.
"Fhan? Ah I thought you got lost!" Fhan releases me to hug his grandmother.
I grab the pie from Oslac with a soft smile, pulling out a dagger to cut her a slice.
"Meleniah. Please eat this. It's a pie me and Oslac made..." She struggles to open her eyes but tries her best to.
"Ah you didn't have you dearie..." She takes the slice with a smile. "I'm so grateful. Thank you."
"Oslac was the one who thought of this idea."
"What a kind boy." The brute approaches and bends down so she can pet his head. To be honest I don't think she knows he's a big pig man yet.
We watch closely as she takes a bite. Fhan looks and me and Oslac in confusion.
"Wow...this is delicious...!" She takes another bite.
"Do...do you still feel sick?" I ask impatiently.
He eyes widen suddenly as slowly she hops to her legs.
"I-I don't feel sick! Oh my goodness! I'm not sick anymore...!" She cries as Fhan gasps.
"Y/n was it the pie? What did you put in it?!" He asks curiously.
"Don't worry about it! Wanna have a slice?"
"Y/n you healed my grandma! We thought there was no cure! You saved my grandma!" Fhan hugs my legs with tears.
I release a relieved sigh as I smile at the brute.
"Is this true? You really found a cure?" I nod as tears fall down her face aswell. "You've really healed me! I thank you boys so much from the bottom of my heart."
I may not be showing it but I'm actually so happy. I feel so energetic I just want to run outside in the fields of grass for hours! I catch oslac drooling as he looks at the pie.
"Here. I'll cut you a slice. You deserve it." I pull out my dagger again, cutting a slice for Oslac, Fhan, and myself.
It's delicious. It tastes better than a normal apple pie. I should become a baker. As I quickly finish my slice, I grab the brute's hand, pulling him outside.
"We should head home." He nods as he stuffs the rest of his pie in his mouth.
I let him have the last slice as we walk home. It's getting dark. But it's so peaceful. We past by the small pond before walking in. I take off my boots and bag, placing it on the table. I take off my daggers, licking the golden apple filling off before putting the sheath back on and placing them in the chest. I hop onto the bed with a sigh. Golden apples...it makes me think...
"Oslac?" The brute approaches the bed, sitting next to me with his back against the window. "That day when I almost died....you saved me. How?"
The brute snorts, looking at me with a raised brow. He rolls his eyes before pointing his hand at my bag where the other golden apples are. Oh he thought I already figured it out. That why looked at me like I was dumb.
"That's amazing...thank you again. I can never forget that you saved me life." The brute snorts as he leans in, licking my face. It activates another memory. "Oslac...do you still love me? I remember that one time when you..."
The brute turns red as his eyes open wide. He oinks and snorts nervously.
I chuckle as I place a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay if you do. One thing I do know about how I feel about you is that you're definitely more than a friend." I smile softly. "You've been there for me. Protected me, comforted me...I don't know where I'd be if I never met you."
The brute smiles back.
"Y-Y/n..." My eyes open wide as he says my name. His voice is deep and almost has a weird accent.
"Y-you said my name..." He nods. "That's amazing..." The brute lays his head on my shoulder with his eyes closed.
I sigh as I look at the part of my hand that I cut to test the regeneration potion theory.
"You hungry?" I rub his ear with my thumb and pointer fingers.
He nods, sitting back up.
"Alright. C'mon." I hop to my feet, helping him up aswell.
We spent the rest of the day looking for food, but it turned dark quicker than we thought it would. We only caught a single chicken but Oslac has a big appetite. I sigh as I pull the chicken out of the furnace.
"You can have the whole thing. I'm not hungry." He tilts his head at me in confusion, giving me a knowing stare.
I'll just look for food tommorrow. I'm feeling tired anyways. But it's probably from lack of food. But its okay. I jump onto the bed, taking off my daggers and putting them in the chest. Suddenly a knock on the door is heard. I sit up with a groan. The brute looks up from devouring his chicken aswell. Who could be knocking at my door at this time? I slowly walk to it, slowly opening it and of course I'm surprised at what I see.
"Uh. Hi guys..!" It's the whole village standing at my door, carrying torches and food.
From the crowd, Fhan runs up to me. "Y/n! My village came to thank you for healing my grandma!" An older looking villager walks up.
"Yes. We heard about everything and how you healed Meleniah. We've been trying to help her for years but didn't know how to. We tried everything. So we're here to thank you and apologize for the way we treated you..." I blink as I feel Oslac approach me from behind.
"O-oh! It was no big deal! And I understand why you guys did that." I smile and he smiles back at me.
"Please accept these gifts as thanks and for forgiveness!" He walks out of the way and villagers start walking up, handing me foods.
It was all types of food! Potatoes, chicken, carrots, and more! As they all walk away, they wave goodbye to me and Oslac. I place all the sacks of vegetables and meats on the table with a huff, still shocked.
"You still hungry?" The brute quickly nods with a smile. "Alright."
I got to cooking and cutting, making a chicken stew for the brute and myself. I put the leftover veggies and meats in a separate chest next to the furnace. The brute hungrily pours all the stew down his throat and licks his lips.
"Finally full?" I tease as I eat my stew.
"Mmm..." He hums.
I quickly finish all of my stew, feeling full and tired. I put out all of the torches still lit up and I put my daggers into my chest again. The moon light lights up the quiet house. It's a full moon tonight. I hop onto the bed, taking off my boots. I sit with my back against the windows, my breathing finally slowing down. Suddenly I feel Oslac shift, moving to sit next to me. He leans in, his snout close to my cheek. I turn to face him with a smirk.
"Can I see your teeth?" He nods, opening his mouth.
I run my fingers over his tusks, feeling the sharp tip of it and the thick base. His teeth are likely similar to mine considering we're both omnivores. But maybe his teeth are thicker...
"Alright. Thank you." He smiles as he rests his head on my shoulder.
I pet his head and ears idly, thinking.
"You're a good boy." I hug his head. "You're kind and gentle. You're funny and so goofy..." I chuckle. "You try to be intimidating and serious but you have a soft side. You're so smart but can be so dumb sometimes."
Suddenly he sits up and pulls me onto his lap, wrapping his arms around my waist as he sits criss cross. I reach my hand up to continue petting him. He seems to like it. He sniffs my hair and nuzzles into it. I'm happy he came into my life. I've been happier lately. My memories with him are all memories I would protect with my life. I would protect Oslac with my life. And I'm sure he'd do the same for me. He's more than my friend. Friend's come and go whenever. My feelings for him feel more than just a friend.
"I...I love you. Goodnight Oslac." The brute squeezes my waist a little bit tighter.
It's comforting. I'm not alone anymore. I have him. And hes has me. I close my eyes, quickly drifting off to sleep.
