Chapter four

Mae sat at the table aimlessly fiddling with her food. She wasn’t at all hungry today, the tension in the air seemed to make it hard for her to breathe and her thoughts continued to veer back to the dream she had had. Slowly she tore an over baked roll into tiny pieces that only a small creature could be thankful for.Turquoise eyes peered at her through her mind’s eye, the depth in them almost unbearable. Nothing but secrets she thought, nothing but endless questions and mysteries. Deep in her thoughts Mae had not noticed the sudden stillness in the usual blustering dinner hall, until Miss Burt’s shrill voice pulled her out of her reverie.

“Attention ladies, attention.” With quick haste all rose to their feet as if a command had been said. When Mae rose to her feet she studied Miss Burt’s features. She looked horribly crude today, her scowl somewhat more imprinted forever on her aged face than usual.

“Ladies, we have a very important guest with us today,” Miss Burt went on. The entire time she seemed to be radiating with dissatisfaction, her forehead was pinched together making the leathery lines deepen. Mae wondered what this was all about, but was hesitant to ask. Something deep inside told her the man with the Turquoise eyes had something to do with the sudden change and it sent shivers down her spine.

“One of your sisters is leaving us today.” Miss Burt trailed off as she sized up each and every girl standing in the dining hall, all except for Mae. The whole entire hall burst with excitement, everyone asking who was leaving, others boasting it were them. Mae stood there completely motionless, her ultimate goal; to be invisible.

“Ladies, ladies quiet please! Will Mae Walters step forward,” Mae was stunned. Unable to move, another girl standing next to her named Abigail pushed her forward. “Go.” Abby whispered all the while giving Mae a reassuring smile. “Ah, Mae, please follow me to the office.” The polite tone that Miss Burt tried to use was anything but polite to Mae.

As she started toward the exit of the Dining Hall, Mae paused and turned back toward all the other girls. Some were smiling and waving her on, gland that she had another family. Giving them hope for the future. However, there were other’s whose face’s showed nothing but hatred and jealousy toward her, among those faces was Ellen. The annoyance she was feeling, clear to see upon her features. Ellen thought it should be her going, not Mae and Mae was starting to believe the same…

Mae was trying her hardest to keep up with Miss Burt’s fierce pace as they went through the Orphanage’s halls that lead to the office. Confusion and fear were coursing through Mae’s veins, in months of being at the Orphanage no one had shown interest in adopting her, and she thought it to be a glorious blessing for she would be eighteen in only a few months and she could escape from this horrible place. Now she was to be shipped off to some strangers household whom she hadn’t even known about until this day, to be their Pet until the time came for her to leave.

Miss Burt cut into her thoughts with her harsh words “You will go straight to your bedchambers, pack all your belongings - nothing more - and leave this place straight away, never to return, do you understand me?” The angry woman stopped in front of Mae’s path bumping her backward into the stone wall, blocking all her paths of escape like a mouse being cornered by a malicious cat. Mae nodded her head before she was released. “Hurry up girl; I will not be kept waiting for you any longer. That’ll be your new keeper’s problem.”

Mae’s eyes began to water as all the cruel things this woman was saying to her began to pile up. Miss Burt since the very first day Mae had been brought here had always referred to her as a thief, lazy and the most undeserving girl ever.

“Is there an issue, M’dear?” A man with a strong Irish accent appeared out of the shadows of Miss Burt’s office, his unannounced appearance made both Mae and the fuming woman in front of her jump from surprise. However Mae was tremendously thankful for the man’s liberation of Miss Burt’s attention. “M’dear, my name is Dillion MacGregor, I will be accompanying you to yer knew home,” with a bow and smile toward Mae, “If you would be so kind to go fetch yer belongings we shall be on our way.” After a long moment Miss Burt took a hesitate step to the side, leaving just only a few inches for Mae to slip past. Dillion again smiled toward Mae all before turning toward a very irritated Miss Burt.

As she made her way down the hall Mae fought to keep the tears at bay; tears of frustration and hurt, even if it were only for a few more months, Mae told herself she should be thankful to be away from that horrid woman all the more.
