Chapter 1
Five years later;
Mae let the music take her over completely, letting it sweep through the room of her and her father's house as she played on. The song was one of her creations, the emotions she had the day it was composed laid out there for you to feel them. People told her many times when seeing her play that her performance had touched them in some sort of way. It was always an overwhelming feeling for her. Slowly her song started to lose its tempo, the piece coming to its end. When she played the last note she felt herself come to her end also. That piece had been one of her very heartfelt memories with her mother, the last time Mae had seen her before she passed away.
She could remember it like it was yesterday; there they lay on a patch of green grass as Mae and her mother named the shapes in the clouds. It had been Mae's favorite childhood game and she and her mother were the ones to always do it while smiling and laughing.
Mae abruptly stopped the song, causing her violin to make a horrible screeching sound. She felt a sharp pain in her chest by her heart, the hurt of loss was still so over powering even though it had been years since her mother passed away. She sat down on the bench closes to her and started taking deep breaths.
Mae could feel tears prick at her eyes causing them to burn, however, she refused to cry. It was pointless anyhow. She sat on the bench staring out the windows watching the sun play on the grass and flowers. The trees bending ever so slightly as the breeze blew by. She looked toward the heavens, watching the clouds past by in a blur. She must have been there for a while for once she came out of her reverie it was already becoming darker as the sun readied itself to let the moon take over.
Sighing deeply, Mae walked toward her violin's case to put it away for the night. She was sure it was past dinner time and was wondering why her father hadn't called for her or came and got her yet. Shrugging it off she walked toward the kitchen where she found her father most nights, he was always the one cooking for he seemed to be too frightened to let Mae in there. Though he had no reason not to let her cook, she had never burnt anything down or caught something on fire... Yes, Mae would admit she couldn't make toast without burning it to char but that wasn't her fault it was the blasted toasters-
Mae stopped in midstride and thought, when she entered the kitchen. There, lying on the floor was her father's body motionless. She couldn't see his face for he was lying on his stomach. She quickly dashed over toward him, calling out to him hoping for a response but none came. Very carefully, Mae started to turn him so he would be lying on his back; she checked his pulse only to find out there was none. Panic set in and she felt like she was going to faint but knew she possibly couldn't, she needed to help her father and fast.
She jumped off the floor and leaped to the telephone dialing 911, "911 what is your emergency?" The operator spoke and she quickly took advantage. "I need an Ambulance right away! I just found my father in the kitchen and his not breathing, please send someone and fast!" Mae's voice was cracking she was helplessly trying to do something to make her father breath, but she didn't know how without furthering whatever is wrong with him. The operator took her information on how to reach them and told her it would take dispatch a while before they would arrive.
Mae sat there holding her father's motionless hand and realized it was cold. Tears streamed down her face. It felt like she could hear her every heartbeat, she watched the clock uneasily until she heard the Ambulance's sirens and shortly following them she spotted the EMS running to the kitchen. The men instantly started doing their job while Mae anxiously watched over their shoulders. She saw one of the EMS put his fingers on her father's neck and count. Afterwards he shook his head to his partner. The one that had been focusing on giving Mae's father CPR looked over his shoulder at her.
She saw the business-like look in his eyes and knew what he was telling her. Mae fainted on the spot hoping never to be woken again.
