"Hi, thank you for meeting me here."

I scurry over to give him a side hug.

Fuck, he smells good.

Better than I ever remembered him smelling before.

Not that he smelled bad before he just smells different.

I take it in and appreciate it briefly before letting go.

I walk around and pull my chair out to sit down.

"What did you wanna talk about?"

"The more heavy responsibilities that come with being a parent."

"Oh, ok."

He shifts in his chair, sitting up a bit more.

I can't tell if it's because he's uncomfortable or he's trying to seem more serious.

It's driving me crazy that I can't read him.

God, please give me something to decode.

"We need to discuss things like scheduled visitations, child support, etc."

He nods.

"You good?"

"Yeah."

"Ok, well, what are you thinking?"

He shakes his head, "Nothing, continue."

"Jae, it's me; you can tell me whatever. Is this too much for you?"

"No, definitely not!"

"Ok, then what is it?"

"Just not what I was expecting, that's all."

"Oh, what were you expecting?"

"It doesn't matter. Please continue."

"Jaden, answer me! What were you expecting?"

"What are we doing?"

"What do you mean?"

"I need to know for future tense what are we gonna be? Coparents or more?"

"Jaden, I can't do this."

I use the table as a force to push my chair out and stand up.

He grabs my wrist before I can walk away, turning me back towards him.

"Do what?"

"This relationship thing. I want you to be there for your daughter, and I want you to have a relationship with her, but it has to be just that."

"Why?"

"Because 𝙬𝙚'𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚. 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙬. 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙬, 𝙨𝙤 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠. Mom can't be sad, mom has to do it all and that's not attainable in a relationship. Heartbreak is inevitable in relationships, so I'd rather just avoid them as a whole."

"Tori, I'm not gonna break your heart."

He takes my hand.

My eyes shoot down to it.

My guard slips briefly, but once the wall comes back, it's reinforced.

I pull my hand back.

"That's what you said last time, Jae."

"𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙮𝙤𝙪'𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙬𝙚'𝙡𝙡 𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙩'𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩."

"I'm sorry, but can't take that chance. You'll be hearing from my lawyer to sort out our custody agreement and child support payments."

"Tori!"

"Goodbye, Jaden."
