ROMS: BATTLE FOR THE WISHING STAR
~~~~~~CHAPTER 1~~~~~~
Zooming through the blue-green planet until it reaches the surface, a city is flocked with many buildings, skyscrapers, and shops. This city is called Object City, and it was inhabited by living things called OBJECT. Objects are a group of living objects that come back to life; they can talk, walk, and hear even if they don't have ears. Objects have the freedom to do anything, object or not; it doesn't matter. But now's not the time to tell the tales of the everyday lives of objects.
The street is full of cars beeping at each other. An acorn-shaped object is sitting at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to come. The object is holding a black backpack. Another object walks by and proceeds to sit down on the bus stop bench. The object resembles a cake pop. Acorn looks at the object before he freezes by just looking at the object.
"Uh... Hey, Shiloh." The acorn spoke with a shy tone to Shiloh; she looked at him and waved.
"Heya! Danny, how are you doing today? She said to Danny with a smile.
"I'm fine; I'm on my way to find a new job," he said.
"What happened to your old job?" "Did something happen?" Shiloh asked with a concerned tone.
"The company I work for went bankrupt due to wage issues; since the company has shut down, I have to find a new job so I can pay my rent next month."
He explained to her, "I understand. So what job are you planning to find?" She said,
"I dunno, I will try to find a job that suits me; I wish the shops, restaurants, and buildings were open to find applicants; finding a job in this city is hard," Danny replied.
"I agree with you, but no worries; whether it takes time and effort to find one, I'm sure you find it!"
She said with a cheerful tone, The bus arrives at the bus stop. Both of them stand up and walk up to the bus. Two hours later, both of them got off the bus. They both waved as they went their separate ways. Unfortunately, every hirer Danny has met was closed or full, and every building he visited was also closed. With the last resort he had left, he went to a local burger restaurant, opened the door as he went to the worker, and asked
"Hello! Do you guys still hire employees for the restaurant?"
Danny said to the worker, "Hmm... yes, of course, sir, we have one slot left, so please go to the manager's room and fill out the papers, and here is your applicant form."
The worker replied to Danny. He sighs in relief as he goes to the manager's room to meet the manager of the restaurant. The manager is a transparent ball with two legs. When he sees Danny, he gives him a serious look, and he starts to sweat.
"Are you an applicant or a customer? You look like you saw a rat," the manager said.
Danny calms down for a moment. "Nothing, anyway, I'm here for the application since I saw your restaurant is hiring new workers."
Danny says, "Oh! Yeah, I forgot about that. Here, take a seat, little fella." The manager said he pointed his finger at the chair, signaling Danny to sit.
Danny walks towards the chair and sits down, saying, "Papers, please." The manager said Danny immediately unzipped his backpack, took out papers, and put them on the table. The manager looks at the papers Danny gave him.
"Your name is... Danny?" The manager said, "Yep, that's me." He replied to the manager, "Well, I'm sorry, but hmm, I can't hire you." The manager explained, "Huh? Why not?" He said it with a worried expression.
"Do you work at a company that's been bankrupt recently? If so? Why do you work there?" The manager asked Acorny, "Yes, I worked there; however, it went bankrupt due to the CEO being greedy and having wage issues." Danny said, "Hmm, I see, there's been news about the company after it went bankrupt; it says... the employees tried to threaten the CEO after the company went bankrupt for no reason, so that's why I'm not going to hire you, sorry kid," he said. "Wait! It's not true; I'm not one of the employees who is trying to blackmail the CEO or do evil thin-"
Danny exclaimed with an upset expression before he could continue to speak. Danny is kicked out of the manager's office along with his application papers, and Danny sighs in defeat as he leaves the restaurant, puts his papers in his backpack, and zips it
He walks down the streets, and he looks down at the cement with a sad look, until he sees the shining light coming from the billboard. He looks at the billboard, which shows a picture of a twilight star in the middle, and the caption down below it reads, "We are looking for 25 contestants to win the fantastic prize! Please call us at 63-677-899-1234 or search for "ROMSAPPLICATIONS.COM." Danny looks at the billboard for a moment before turning away and continuing to walk, as the sky has already turned dark.
Danny went to the apartment building called J.I. Apartments. He lives in Unit 078, Floor 3. He went to his apartment and opened the door before he closed it. Immediately after he went inside, he went outside to the balcony and took a deep breath, reflecting on life and the sky.
"Dang, finding a new job is hard, and that manager?..." he paused for a moment.
"He's a jerk; he's probably seen it in FoodBreak; that's fake news." "I mean, sure, the company I worked for is bankrupt because the CEO is not very reliable, but that doesn't mean all the employees are bad people."
He said as he looked at the sky once more, staring at the blue, dark sky with stars, until one blue star appeared. The star is making a trail into the sky and resembles a shooting star. Acorny looks at the star with amazement.
"Woah, is that a shooting star?" "I know making a wish during the shooting star is fake, but... I want to try it out to see if it works."
Danny closed his eyes and prayed as he was about to make a wish: "I wish I could find a job that pays decently in order to pay rent and.. my family's bills whatever.."
He said that after he opens his eyes and the star disappears in the sky, Acorny goes back inside, brushes his teeth, and goes to sleep.
The next day, Danny woke up and saw his phone ringing on the nightstand. He reached out for his phone and swiped down, and the screen showed a phone call coming from Shiloh. He accepted the phone call,
"Good morning, Danny! Did you get a job already?" Shiloh asked
"Nope, I didn't get a job yesterday," Danny said.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that you couldn't find a job yesterday. Please let me know if there's anything I can do. Shiloh said
"Nah, it's fine; I won't give up on trying to find a new job in the city," Danny said.
"Ah, I see. Still, I just want you to let me know if there's anything you need, but I'm sorry. If I say this, but" "The school is looking for a new teacher because the previous teacher slipped and broke their feet, so do you want to go to the school or do you still need some time to think?" Shiloh said
Danny thinks for a bit. "I would like some time to think about whether I want to accept this job offer or continue to find a job."
"Alright, see you later!" Shiloh said
"See ya" Danny replied as Shiloh closed the call. Danny stood up from his bed and went to the kitchen to grab a bowl and spoon before grabbing the milk and a cereal box from his fridge. After he was done eating cereal, he went to the bathroom and washed and wiped his acorn body. He went to his couch, sat down, and grabbed a remote to open the TV. The TV showed an advertisement about a retro microphone talking about how they were finding 25 contestants to join an object show called ROMS to win a special prize. Wait, this looks familiar. Danny squints his eyes, staring at the TV.
"Pssh, yeah, right, I've seen this ad on the billboard already." "I hope I didn't end up joining the show or something." He talked to himself after the ad ended, but Danny thought for a few minutes about the ad he watched.
"Hmm. Maybe I should try to join their "object show"—wait, no, I should get some cash to pay rent and stuff." Danny said as he turned off the TV, grabbed his big ol' backpack, and headed out of his apartment.
