Chapter Seven:

I can feel my father watching me as we drive home.

I can feel the blood rushing to dance across my cheek-bones.

“So who was the boy?” My dad says, interrupting the silence.

“Oh, just a friend,” I say, attempting to sound nonchalant, all the while freaking out on the inside.

My father laughs and his lean, well-structured face crinkles up into a grin that makes him look younger. “All I’m saying is that it’s about time that there was a boy you were interested in.”

I shoot him a look that says to stop talking and then smile, but only after a second spent scowling. I roll my eyes, and don’t say another word for the rest of the ride.

***

Twenty five hours have passed since Tyler and I had drank coffee together, not that I was counting.

I’d just gotten home from my dad’s office, after a whole day of wondering thoughts and many irritated self-lectures at school, and I now sat cuddled underneath my duvet, sitting up on my bed, and starring out my window at nothing in particular.

I had been sitting here for an uncountable amount of seconds, thinking of how pathetic I had become to be developing feelings for a boy I had only just met and feeling anger at the fact that, for once, I couldn’t numb my feelings and forget him.

It’s like Tyler was a rare disease that was too powerful for my white blood cells to fight.

Oh, real romantic, I chastise myself, rolling my eyes at the fact that I’m lecturing myself.

I am watching the sun set as my phone rings.

It’s Price Tag by Jessie J which means the number’s not one that I have programmed in.

I leap forward and grab my phone off the bedside table.

“Hello?” I ask curiously, wondering who could be calling.

And it’s like my prayer has been answered when I hear a deep voice cough and say “Hi.”

“Tyler?” I ask hopefully, not sure who else would have my number.

“Hey,” he says, this time sounding a little more confident.

“Hi,” I breathe and I could hit myself because I can feel a grin creeping up onto my face.

“How was your day?”

“It’s improving,” I smile. “And yours?”

“Great. Look, I wouldn’t randomly just call you out of the blue but I forgot to give you back your pen,” Tyler says.

I draw in a breath. This is where, if I was Steph, I would say, ‘I bet you didn’t give it back on purpose’, but I’m not Steph and so I don’t.

All I reply with is “Oh.” I bury my face into the shelter and warmth of the duvet blanket.

“I could always keep it, if you don’t want it,” I hear Tyler say.
