Family Forever - Chapter 3

Today was Sophie's surgery. Her surgery was scheduled at eight and would last about six hours with two to three hours in recovery. Kevin came down this morning early. He is staying in a guest room in the hospital. The rest of the Jonas' are going to be over soon also.

"Hey Soph," Dani said as she went and combed her fingers through Sophie's hair at half past six. "We have to get you ready for your big day today, come on let's change you," Dani said as she removed her soiled diaper and cleaned her up. Sophie had a shower last night, so she didn't have to wake up so early today to get in the shower and ready by the time they took her in.

The Jonas family arrived a little before seven. They were in the room for about fifteen minutes before the cart that took Sophie down to surgery was rolled in her room. "You can come up with us," one of the nurses said as she transferred Sophie over to the cart.

"When they got up to the pre-op room, Paul pulled everyone in for a prayer, "Dear Lord, we want you to keep Sophie safe. We want you to make sure that the doctor's hands are guided in the right direction. We pray that Sophie is not in too much pain after the surgery. Amen," Paul said as he leaned down and gave his little Sophie a kiss on the head.

"Here Mom and Dad, put these on," the nurse said as she gave blue scrubs to Kevin and Dani to put on over their clothes.

"We are going to say goodbye to you now, honey," Denise said as she leaned down and gave Sophie a kiss on the head.

"Bye Grandma, love you," Sophie said as she looked up at Denise with tears in her eyes. She wasn't ready to have this surgery that was for sure. She just wanted to go hide in a hole and never come out again.

Paul remembered when Sophie had first asked them if she could call them Grandma and Grandpa. They were delighted to be called that. It was in New York City while Kevin and Dani were on their honeymoon. It was late one night when they got back from seeing a Broadway Production of Mary Poppins. Sophie had fallen asleep as soon as they got out of the show, but when they got back to the hotel, she seemed to get her second wind and was wild again. She asked them that night and they both said yes that it would be okay for her to call them Grandma and Grandpa.

"Love you honey," Denise said as the nurse pushed her into the pre-op room after everyone else had said good-bye to her.

Kevin and Dani followed Sophie into the pre-op room while they waited for her to be taken back into the operating room.

Another nurse came over and looked at Sophie's orange bracelet. The orange bracelet meant she was susceptible or had malignant hyperthermia. Sophie was only susceptible to it; she had been put under with triggering and non-triggering agents before but has never actually shown malignant hyperthermia.

A nurse came over and asked Sophie if she wanted an IV put in now or in the operating room. She explained to Sophie that she could have sleepy medicine which would make her sleepy and then they would put the IV in, in the operating room. After looking at Kevin hoping he would help her decide, Sophie chose to have the sleepy medicine, since she has a high anxiety and fear of needles.

Once Sophie was sleepy the nurses came and took her away from us, she was crying and didn't want to go in, but both of them told her that we loved her and would see her when she woke up. We then watched her as the nurses rolled her into the operating room.

Paul, Denise, Joe, Nick, and Frankie waited outside of the pre-op room until Kevin and Dani came out. When they did, they all went down to the waiting room together.
