You only have about 720 days worth of memories.
Before those 720 days began, more than 6570 days of memories were lost, forgotten, and shattered into bits.
They didn't feel like yours. You were rebirthed two years ago. The only person who knew you in the past was Diluc. He was in your only memory, after all. A memory that you couldn't understand. A memory that left you in heartache every time your mind wanted to piece together the parts that built who you were.
Why is it only now that you're thinking about your past? It wasn't a problem before, so what changed?
"Are you going to sleep soon?" Diluc asks, your thoughts scattering off when he meets your gaze.
While the maids gather dirty plates, everyone is upstairs getting ready for bed. You stay on the first floor, counting down the time for when everyone would fall asleep to allow yourself enough time to search the manor.
Ten minutes turn into thirty minutes.
Thirty minutes turn into an hour.
"I thought you knew better than to think that considering you're my number one fan," you reply.
"Don't flatter yourself."
He begins to walk up the steps, and curiously, you follow after him to his room. Once inside, you walk to the window, suddenly not caring what Diluc is up to.
You have never seen the moon before. If you did, you imagine it's gorgeous, shining over everyone even if the sky is believed to be fake.
The moon is the definition of misfortune covered by its beauty. That's what everyone had told you. That's why the festival exists.
29 days complete the entire moon cycle, but it only takes 15 days for a new moon to turn into a full moon. That's why people wait 14 extra days before the phases of the moon begin. That's why they call the 14 non-existent moons before the phases start 'new moons.'
That means there are 14 days left until the phases of the moon begin. 14 days without a moon in sight. 14 days before even a mere symbol like a clover won't be able to disguise the chaos.
Why couldn't they start the festival when there's a crescent moon or something? It seems so complicated and unnecessary.
Diluc yawns. "Are you going to sleep soon?"
You turn your head to him, staring at his loose hair. "You already asked that question."
"I'm asking again."
You roll your eyes. "You already know the answer."
"Yes, but I don't see the harm in answering," he replies.
You sit on his bed, laying back and allowing the light to hit your face. "You're a stubborn thing, aren't you?"
Diluc glares at you from the bathroom as he runs his fingers through his hair. You huff when you realize he isn't going to reply to your snarky remark.
"Fine. I'll answer," you say. "I don't sleep at night. I do my job best when the sun isn't shining on my face. There. Are you happy?"
He leaves the bathroom, walking over to sit on the other side of the bed. His hair dangles off his shoulders. It's softer than the last time you saw his hair down. He should leave it like that more often, you think. Maybe someone would ask him out if he did.
"I was asking because I don't know how far your home is. I don't even know where you live." He gazes at you before looking away. "You can sleep here if you would like."
