(juuust so yall know, steve plays guitar but is also working at family video-)
Steve Harrington was spending yet another precious Saturday afternoon inside Hawkins' local Family Video store. Its usual bleak interior had been lacking any sign of life, resulting in immense amounts of boredom for the boy.
He had often looked forward to sharing weekend shifts with his best friend, Robin Buckley, who was currently bedridden due to her "nasty flu" symptoms. Steve was almost positive she was being over dramatic as an excuse for skipping work, presumably infected with the simple (yet infamous) common cold.
He was obviously disappointed with her absence, as he had been looking forward to spending time with her. The oddball pair had found solace in one another, oftentimes exchanging snippets of juicy, small-town gossip alongside their typical lighthearted banter. Steve had never imagined himself becoming friends with Robin in the past, but was secretly very grateful to have met her.
The stocky brunette heaved a heavy sigh, scrubbing intently at an ink blot on his forest green uniform vest (the Family Video logo was embroidered over his right breast in a fluorescent orange, scrawling across his body in an unsightly fashion). A randomly selected VHS tape played on the television set that hung idly above the front desk, the speakers gargling with static quality. Steve's hazel eyes flicked upwards to acknowledge black-and-white characters waltzing on screen, a woman's voice pouring out in a passionate serenade.
Eddie, my love... I love you so
How I've wanted for you,
You'll never know...
His thick eyebrows twitched in alarm, recognizing the name of another one of his friends: Eddie! Eddie Munson, the newest (and strangest) member to join his familial group. He smirked fondly at the remembrance of his prominent intimidation towards the man, only to later stumble across his true nerdy, goofball nature. He sort of admired Eddie for always being so unapologetically honest. He never hid his true intentions, which was an aspect of his personality that Steve was inspired by.
Please, Eddie...
Don't make me wait too long
Steve was really happy to have met Eddie. There was something about him that was so intriguing, something that was so exciting and new. He reminded him of a combination between Robin and Dustin; two of his most favorite people in the whole world. He was kind, with a soft spot for obnoxious metal music and elaborate storytelling board games. Steve had never really considered playing Dungeons and Dragons until he met Eddie.
Eddie, please write
Just one line...
Tell me you love me,
Still only mine
Steve halted his movements, allowing his mind to wander deeper into a realm of daydreams. Harrington had always been a fairly confident young man, yet continued to get caught in romantic fantasies. He was hopelessly sappy, yet only displayed that side of himself to those he really trusted. He imagined himself opening up more to Eddie. How would Eddie feel about his affectionate side?
"Geez, big boy, I never would've pinned you as so vulnerable!"
"...Not that that's a bad thing, though."
Please, Eddie...
Don't make me wait too long
"I kinda like that in a man. Strong on the outside, sweet on the inside. That's just like you, huh? Are you a big softie deep down, Harrington?"
Steve thought about how his full name would sound rolling off of Eddie's tongue. He pictured him saying it teasingly, then tenderly. He pictured Eddie nicknaming him something special, something cheesy. Something dumb, like Stevie.
"Stevie-boy..."
He felt his cheeks grow hot.
You left me last September,
Since that time I've been so alone!
Now all I do is wish and wait
For you,
Eddie, since you've been gone...
The soft song was cut off by the sharp shriek of applause, the tinny sound of the television pulling Steve back to reality. He blinked hard for a moment, wiping his warm forehead with the neglected cloth in his fist. The ink smudged on his skin from such abrupt contact, which remained irrelevant to the oblivious boy. His head was drifting back into the clouds above.
Steve normally thought about getting intimate with girls, but Eddie remained a strange, outlying exception. As though the song he heard that day at work had him in a permanent trance, he began to notice reoccurring daydreams of holding Eddie's hand, stroking Eddie's hair, clinging to Eddie's side. He brushed it off as his typical romantic side getting confused with the yearning of having a close friend. This rationalization struck Steve as an explicitly natural feeling, leading to a consistent denial of his true emotions;
He was deeply in love with Eddie Munson.
