Adoption

This is an extra chapter to my book 'Boy Across The Hall'. (Highly recommended you read, hehe)

Papers upon papers are stacked on our coffee table as we drain the last drops of coffee from our mugs. James and I have been up to our eyes in adoption papers for the past 2 weeks. When we got the results back a few months ago that we couldn't have a baby, we were devastated, but we got through it together - like we always do.

James places the last of the coffee beside the papers, wraps his arm around my shoulders, and leans back on the couch. We are trying to cram in any last scanning of the papers before Steve, Nat, Wanda, and Vis come over to our apartment for dinner tonight. For the past few minutes, I've been staring at the same 2 photos of two adorable, tiny, and innocent babies and pondering over what I want to do.

"What about these two?" I hand James the 2 photos.

He grabs the papers and looks deeply at the photos with a hardened expression, one that even after a year of marriage and 4 years of friendship, I still can't fully read. After a few silent minutes, he places them back on the coffee table and smiles at me.

"I love you."

"I love you too. But, what do you think?" I ask.

"I think I want to whisk those two adorable babies away right now so we can finally start our lives." He tumbles on top of me and we fall into a giggling fit.

When he gets off of me, we kiss each other passionately and stare into each other's eyes. The room falls silent as I see my future in his eyes. I can see us moving out of the city later in life and watching our kids playing on the living room floor as we sit on the couch, clinging to one other. With huge smiles on our faces, we sit back up on the couch and tidy up the coffee table for our guests. I place the 2 photos on the top of the piles and smile down at them, feeling an impatient feeling of happiness. 

"I can't believe we can start our lives soon. We can finally have our own family." I beam.

"I know, baby. It's all I've ever wanted with you." He hugs my body as the doorbell rings.

James answers the door and lets Steve, Nat, Wanda, and Vis inside our apartment. They are all carrying different parts of tonight's dinner and placing them on the round, wooden dining table. We all gather around the food, fill up our plates and sit down, instantly starting a conversation. We catch up on everyone's different parts of our lives that we've missed the past week. Eventually, the topic of James and I's life comes up in conversation.

"So, lover birds, how's the adoption going?" Nat questions.

"Well." James looks in my direction for approval, to which I nod my head. "We think we might have our little family all thought out."

The table goes up in cheers, everyone smiling and hugging each other. Some have tears pouring down their cheeks, and others can't let go of each other as they hug happily. The night continues fastly as we celebrate through smiles, many glasses of wine, and cuddling on the couch in front of the TV. James and I can't let go of one other, too euphoric about the prospect of our future. We share many kisses, lingering glances, and hugs all throughout the evening. Even after everyone leaves, we can't seem to get enough of the other's touch.

After everything that happened to us, we can finally have our happily ever after.
