Steve Harringtons' parents were always out on important business trips. If that's what you could call it. Mrs.Harrington would tag along because she didn't trust her husband to stay faithful while away from his family for a long while. It was all so... messed up.

And yet, nobody else seemed to see it that. They all got excited to attend the next big party Steve was socially obligated to have at his fancy, big, empty house. Everyone loved the endless supply of alcohol. Steve didn't– it had caused lots of trouble on certain nights.

When the party was over and Steve was alone, the 4 walls almost always seemed to close in on him. The empty rooms and eerie quiet nearly mocked him with each passing hour he spent without his parents, without his family.

There wasn't much to complain about still, even when the Harrington's were home, it was always loud, unnecessarily bickering, or the complete opposite. Home or not, Steve's parents were too busy to be bothered with him. At a certain point in his life, Steve had stopped caring. His heart had stopped feeling heavy when his dad waved him off. The tears had stopped burning his eyes when his mom smiled sympathetically but did the same thing his dad would– never going against Mr. Harringtons word.

For years, Steve had told himself he didn't care though it was hard not to. Being constantly reminded of how much of a failure he had become just seemed to have that affect. Those parties he'd thrown, dropped his grades, turning him into a druggie– wise words of his dad by the way. Of course the sleepless nights, or the ache in his chest keeping him up countless hours could never be the cause of his terrible grades. Nobody saw that. They'd dropped his grades just enough to get him denied at any college he'd try to apply too. A job at the home video store could never make up for it all. Steve's dad wanted him to work for him. If he wasn't going to make a decent living on his own, it would be under the watch and wing of his father. Make something out of him.

But Steve didn't want that. If he was being honest with himself he really didn't know what he wanted. Only one thing had always been clear to him. He wanted to be a good man. Marry a beautiful woman whom he'd love unconditionally. He wanted to have kids - and better yet be there for them. He wanted to set the baby down for bed at night , as his wife gets some well deserved rest after an exhausting day. He wanted to brush their hair and make them breakfast before school in the morning. He wanted fun summer nights with the family, making the kids s'mores over the fire and swatting away mosquitoes as he heard joyous laughs behind him because, god, did he look stupid. He wanted to have a family and give them the love he never had.

But nobody saw that.

Nobody saw anything aside from the picture perfect smiles and successful living that the Harrington's have made.
