Flashback

Opening the door to our home that is deep in the woody terrain with my boot, but careful about the swing, my unoccupied hand shot out to stop the door from impacting the wall, knowing that the wall would be fine, but cautious of the little things that we have.

My other trembling hand was occupied with carrying the wood for the fireplace, as I closed the door. Although, it was a trek into the woods, it had felt good to get even some sunlight after staying indoors all day, but it was all week as my mind remembers the true times that really passed us by.

The human stories of vampires being burned by sunlight crossed my hyper-focused mind making me laugh internally, a laugh that lightened my dulling eyes a minuscule amount. Humans have never seen us before in our driven intentions to keep it that way, let alone, all humans know is assumptions in their narrowed knowledge.

They know nothing about us.

My teeth were chattering against each other, the cold making visible cold breaths leave my lips while I started to rub my bare arms quickly with my hands, hoping to get warm at a faster rate.

It was during the coldest and most treacherous parts of winter and my mother and I didn't have enough saved currency to exchange for warmer clothes, the scarcely limited coins that we have left expended on food and water entirely.

There was no other way to acquire luxuries, warmer clothes and better quarters for living as trading was banned in this land when vampires started to exploit the opportunity to scam more often and frame people.

My mother and I lived further away from the village, and because of this, our home grew to be more weathered in its externalities because of the harsh winter winds, and this winter can't be weakened because there were no surrounding buildings to break apart the cold drafts.

But our home was small, consisting of one bedroom, a living room, and a small area for cooking and preparing meals. We may not have had money, but my mother I had each other.

It was more than enough for me, for us.

My mother and I round up and protect the livestock in the castle acres that are dedicated to ranching for the sort. We work for both Count Rockwell and Countess Eurella, serving them with unquestioned urgency when they request for our services alone.

The Count and Countess run an extremely secluded and powerful nation of vampires, a powerful nation and country by the name of Novautnea. And here in this populated nation of vampires, many of the townsfolk don't possess an abundance of money or riches and the nobles don't provide charity. But even so, the townsfolk understand that because the nobles can't afford special treatment. The adversaries between us and another, the warfare that is occurring right now at this moment, has become the greatest expense nationwide.
