"Fake."  I muttered and crumpled the note into a ball and threw it at the waves.  As the water touched it, it smoothed out and the waves brought it back to my side.  I furrowed my eyebrows.  That was strange.  Something inside me picked it up and read it all over again.

"Let's prove how fake this is."  I said and took a step into the water.  The chilly waves made my toes tingle.

"Chant this 10 times?  Easy enough."  I said to myself and began to recite the 'spell.'

"Insouciant inclemency, Redoubtable mediocracy, Refutable humanity, Make me what I wish to be….. A MERMAID, Witches one and witches all, Give this power to me."  I recited it over 10 times and decided that my silver heart necklace would be the symbol.  My legs instantly began to burn and I began to get scared.  Was I just going to form a fish tail like that?  I stood there for 10 minutes before the burning died down and I felt incredibly dizzy.

I stumbled up the beach and took a seat back where my book was.  I groaned as everything around me began to blur and the world went black.

"Elly?  Are you feeling better?"  I heard my brothers, Jake and Dan say.  They were identical twins and both were holding glasses of water.

"What?  Where am I?"  I shot up and found I was back in bed.

"You passed out on the beach.  We brought you inside and mom went out to get you some medicine."  Jake said.  I groaned and clutched my stomach.  I felt sick and my legs itched and were redder than the freshly cut roses in the vase by my bedside.

I downed the two glasses of water and the other two that Jake and Dan had to go get.  I noticed that the book was still beside my bed, and the envelope stuck out from the middle of it.  I grabbed it while Jake and Dan were getting more water and almost fainted again as I read.  I was experiencing all the side affects, except the urge to sing, since I was pretty much tone death.

My mom got home and had me take some pills along with the 30 glasses of water I had already drank (not exaggerating.)

For the rest of the night, I read the book.  It was pretty interesting and explained pretty childish things like how mermaids were real and showed maps of where they were mostly located.  It was funny since there was no little red dot along the coast of cape cod.

I eventually turned out the light at 2 in the morning and fell into a deep sleep.

I was swimming through the water.  Fish pushed along with me as a dolphin flew by.  I looked to my side and noticed a man with a dark blond hair and long violet fish tail.  He smiled at me when I noticed I was staring at him.  I try to say something but I'm suddenly woken by the sounds of someone calling for me.

I woke at 3 in the morning.  It was dark and the moon was still out.  I found myself getting out of bed and slowly making my way outside onto the beach.  I couldn't control myself and had to fold my arms to keep the chilly winds from freezing me.  I looked up at the moon and sighed.  It was so beautiful that..that I began to sing.

A sweet melody escaped my lips and I found myself stepping into the water.  It was warm to the touch and made my body feel content.  I began swimming, still singing, unable to control myself as I came to a rock at least a mile out into the ocean. I climbed onto the rock and stared at the sky as I sang.

I sang until sunlight and when the moon was out of view, I stopped singing.  I didn't even loose my voice, and my throat actually felt amazing.  I noticed I was still on the rock, and the land was distant.  How was this possible?  How could I have swam so far and sing so long?

I climbed off the rock and paddled to shore.  It wasn't until the sun was fully in view that I reached land, and when I did, I was exhausted.

"Elly!"  Kelly shrieked as she found my dragging myself onto the sand in exhaustion.  She rushed over and fell to my side.  "What the heck are you doing!?  You were gone half the night?  And what's that on your leg?"  Her voice was so quick, it took me a minute to comprehend what she had said.

I looked down at my legs to see little teardrop outlines going up my legs until just bellow my belly button.

"I'm really not sure."  I said skeptically.  Kelly helped me up and lead me inside.

"Don't worry, I won't tell mom."  She whispered and covered for me while I snuck up to get changed.  I didn't take a shower since the saltwater felt good on my skin.  I pulled on a pair of gray sweatpants over my legs and threw on a tee shirt.  I came downstairs to find my parents preparing breakfast.

"Did you hear that last night?"  My dad asked as he flipped a pankcake on the frying pan.

"I did.  it was so beautiful though."  My mom replied.  She looked up at me and furrowed her eyebrows.

"Are you wearing those colored contacts?"  She questioned.  I bit my lip.

"What do you mean?"  I asked.

"Your eyes are so blue, I could have sworn you had brown eyes like me."  After she said that I rushed into the bathroom and stared at my reflection.  My eyes had turned from the ugly muddy brown to a vibrant robin egg blue.

"This can't be happening."  I said to my reflection.  Was the spell real?  Was I actually changing into a mermaid?

I curled up in the corner and began to cry.  I needed to see Armata.  I  wiped the tears from y new blue eyes, took a deep breath, and stepped out into the hall.

"Hey mom, I'll be back in a little while."  I mumbled and hurried out.  My mom didn't seem to notice.  I sprinted to Armata's, but I began to cry when I saw what was replaced with her shop.  Instead of the building where it should be was nothing but more parking.

"Armata!"  I yelled.  I didn't even care that a woman and her daughter were staring at me.

I needed to get back to the back, maybe there was some way to reverse whatever was happening.  I ran back home and went straight up to my room to find my mother sitting on my bed, staring blankly at the mermaid book.  crap.
