This morning, I went with Mariano to meet his lawyer.

"You must be Grace Kennedy" He held out his hand and introduced himself as William.

"I'm glad I could have this time to explain things further as you've gotten the surface information" He goes back to his desk and offers me the seat in front of it and I take it.

Mariano was asked to wait outside, William said that it was the rule so that his presence didn't persuade my decision.

I was nervous about what he was going to tell me.

Mariano mentioned he had to say a few things that were written on his side of the court's contract. Things about his history and other things that he wouldn't be surprised about if I ran out of the office.

"Alright then, I'm going to read a few things out to you. Small history on Mr. Delrosa and at the end you can sign the bottom of this and if you decline you are free to walk out of this room and go back to your life" William wasn't helping me nor Mariano but he collected the black folder and opened it.

"Mariano Delrosa is currently thirty-three years old, he is fighting a battle for the custody of four-year-old Iris Elise Delrosa. Some challenge of this case is the history that Delrosa has built for himself and that has caused a few complications in the completion of this process" William begins and I keep my hands flat on my thighs.

"In his early twenties, Mr. Delrosa found himself being charged with multiple counts of car theft, damage to private property and vehicle, physical harm to others, and violation of his probation" It almost comes as a shock to me as he lists off a few things Mariano has been caught up in when he was in his twenties before he had Iris.

I kept that this all happened before her and remembered that Romero mentioned he gave up all of that when she was born.

"He's done his time, and his service to repay any damages but this is still on his record and will remain there" William looks at me from time to time and he might be confused about why I'm still sitting here.

"Those were the reasons the court had its doubts about the custody. Even though Mariano is the only person capable of taking care of Iris, they still think it's better to hold off on it until he can prove that he will and can raise and surround her with a safe environment" He closes the file and talks to me directly.

"I would be a hypocrite to walk out of the door and leave," I say, it would be wrong of me to leave after hearing his crimes knowing that it could've been far worse and that I know my father works with worse people that do way worse things.

"So you're saying you want to sign the paper? This one will be filed to the courts to let them know that you are living and supporting them" He repeats it to make sure I heard him in the first place, almost shocked when I asked for the pen.

"Something tells me you're not just doing it for the money, but what you want to use it for," He says as he hands me the file and I don't respond quickly.
