" mixed signals, mixed signals they're killing me. i don't know what you want but i know what i need."

i felt a tap on my shoulder, pulling me out of my world of music.
i pulled my AirPods out of my ears putting them in my pocket and looked back at the person that had tapped me.
i became face to face with my brothers girlfriend, Ava, who was looking at me with a frown.

"what's wrong?" i asked her, tilting my head slightly to the side.
she said nothing, all she did was point forward. i looked to where she was pointing, the same frown she had on her face growing on mine.

my best friend, TaTa, was kissing her again.
Courtney Micheals, his on and off ex girlfriend for the past year.
he had told me multiple times he was going to stop fucking with her, and i believed him every single time.

even though i knew he would just go back to her, i was still disappointed every time i seen him kissing her. holding her. touching her.
all the things i wanted him to do with me.

he didn't know that, though.

i looked back to Ava, forcing a smile on my face.
"i'm happy for them." i lied.
Ava sighed, shaking her head. she was the only one, besides my brother, that knew of my crush on Tata.
"y/n, he ain't gonna change. you can't keep waiting on him." she told me, moving a strand of my curly hair from my face.

i nodded, looking down at my shoes.
i knew she was right, i just didn't want to believe it.
"i know." i said, fiddling with the sleeves of my beige essentials hoodie. the one tata had bought me.

"cmon, the bells gonna ring in like 15 minutes. we gon leave early," she grabbed my hand, pulling me up from the cafeteria bench i had been sat on for the past 45 minutes, eating snacks and listening to music.

we walked side by side out of the cafeteria, her arm wrapped around me.
"yo, y/n!" i heard tata yell after me.
i tried to look back but Ava grabbed my face, forcing me to look forward.
i sighed. i felt guilty ignoring him, but if Ava didn't want me to i knew it was for the best.

"you gotta move past him." she told me once we had left through the cafeteria doors, now making our way toward the schools entrance.

"he's still my best friend, Ava." i said. "he don't even know i like him, i can't jus be ignoring him for 'no reason', it's weird." i made quotations with my fingers at the words 'no reason', since there actually was a reason. just one he didn't know of.

ava shrugged, laughing. "so what? you bitch nigga free wether he yo friend or not!"
i laughed as well, shaking my head.
me and ava had very different personalities, she was always loud and confident while i was mostly quiet and not as out there as she was.

but somehow we got along great, and i would consider her my best friend, second after Ta of course.

"i'll text your brother to grab our bags from our lockers after," she said as we pushed open the entrance doors, being hit with a bright beam of sunlight shining down on us.
i nodded, bringing my hands up to shield my eyes from the sun.
