"A picture is more than a blank page. Take out those dusty photo albums. pick out photo #14. look at the photo for 2-3 minutes. Then for 10 minutes, write all of the feelings that photograph made you feel. Don't censor yourself. Just write."

A photo of cupboards I painted, half-way through the process. At that point I was pretty discouraged because I had come to the realization that my sills sometimes weren't what I thought they were... I could employ some pretty amazing techniques and all, but when it came to just painting something, most times it didn't turn out the way it was supposed to. Sometimes I felt like I should just paint it over and start again, but time was short. I had to do my best and then move on. Sometimes I did paint some stuff over, but I always tried and tried and tried. I don't think anybody can blame me for that. Now, when I walk into the room and see them, I feel proud because it was a massive project and I got through it. I used skills and techniques I had learned in that very same room for four years to paint those cupboards. It felt amazing to finish them and finally step back and just look.

It is my deepest hope now that the students who learn in that room have fun with their art. I hope they learn to challenge themselves as I did, and when they feel like they should just paint it all over, they should take a step back, breathe, and then jump back in. You will have to paint some stuff over, but that doesn't mean you need to give p on the whole concept.

Oh, and time-management is important too ;)
