Chapter 5: *The Child*

I walked around my cave system. I was now, what, 11? I think? I don't know. It had been a long time.

It had been a long time and I now knew the cave system like second nature.

I had figured out most of my powers. Skulk, a special plant that reacts to sound waves littered the halls and floors, letting me know what was happening anywhere in my cave no matter where I was.

I had also figured out digging, when I dug the skulk was illuminated in my... vision? I don't know. Anyway, it let me always know where home was.

I was walking around when my skulk picked up a child's cry. I dug and followed the sound.

I popped out on the surface face to face with a large grizzly bear.

When I came out of the ground the bear got startled. It then fled as I was known by the forest animals after... removing a bear family and 2 wolf packs for being too loud. The animals now follow my lead and leave me alone.

I turned to look at the small child, maybe 2 in age.

The child looked at me, fear in his eyes. His raven black hair poofing under a triceratops hat.

I then sat down slowly, the child lowered their guard after maybe 3 minutes and walked closer to me. After holding my arm in his small hands he made a cooing sound as he made grabby hands.

I gazed down at him before slowly standing up, I picked him up and placed him on my head as I started walking to the nearest cave entrance.

"Scrall?" I voiced, unable to actually talk.

"Skulk... mmmmmmm... Skulky!" The child said, grabbing my antenna. I let out a small shriek when he did so he quickly let go and grabbed the sides of my head.

"Skulky, where go?" The child asked. "Home dat wa," he said, probably pointing.

I then entered the cave entrance and continued to walk down the cave, taking different paths every time I came to a crossroad.

Soon we entered into a room with the skulk plant decorating the floor. At this point, I set the child down and sat.

"Skulky!" He said.

"What is his name and what is he doing in the forest..?" I asked myself. I then pointed to him before tilting my head.

The child blinked at me before lighting up with a gasp. "Skulky, do you want to know my name?" He asked. Before I could even nod my head he continued on saying that; "Well Aunty Mandalay says my name is Kota, but I have been called 'Bean' or 'Sunshine' by all of Aunty's friends at least once..."

I nodded at this. "His name is Kota, good to know. It also seems like his Aunt and her friends are kind to him, that's good."

Kota looked down and started shuffling as he kicked at the floor, "Aunt Mandalay is probably looking for me... I saw a cute bunny and chased it..."

I nodded again, "so he is only lost."

I let out a gurgled sigh and laid against the cold, stone wall.

Kota walked up to me and sat in my lap as I used my antenna to search for Mandalay, or anyone looking for Kota for that matter.

I heard 3 women yelling for the child in my lap along with a man.

Alright, I need to bring him home...

maybe in like, 30 minutes... I can take a break...

Kota fell asleep in my lap as I calmed my beating heart.

It was... nice. Having another life form there with me.

One that wouldn't run away.

I enjoyed having Kota there, and I was happy I found him.

Going out today was a good choice.
