I knock on the door and listen closely for the faint response.
"Come in!"I suck in a a breath and adjust my tie, almost as if this was an interview. When I walk inside my eyes look around the room until they land on soft, blue eyes.
The blue-eyed gentleman stands up, reaching over his desk to shake my hand. I bend over halfway before taking a seat in the chair in front of him.
"Very nice to see you, Mr. Armani." The man says. I go to repeat the same thing, my eyes rapidly searching around his desk for a name-tag.
"Mr. Guisse." He says, leaning back and crossing his legs.
I turn to look at the girl next to me but her head is turned and focused on the buildings that are littered in graffiti outside of the window.
"It's very nice to meet you, Mr. Guisse." I reply, starting to sweat nervously.
"So, Taylor." Mr. Guisse says, making Taylor turn to look at him. My eyes stare at her side-profile and I know realize just how much we look alike.
We shared the same button nose, hazel eyes, and freckles. Even down to the small scar above our eye that led into our eyebrow where it seemed like the hair would never grow.
Besides for the small scaring on my face and the piercings Taylor had on her body, the main difference between us was hair color.
My hair had always been brown, except for when I was a baby. A few small blonde strands still linger but everything else about me is brown.
Taylor had been blonde as a baby, and it seems as if she stayed the same shade of blonde. The main difference now was the red highlights in her hair.
"This is your older brother, Harlee." He said. She turned towards me with a blank face before turning back towards Mr. Guisse.
"Technically, he is your guardian as he is twenty-six." Taylor sucked in a breath.
"If he's twenty-six, how come I've been in this shit-hole and bouncing from foster-home to foster-homefor so long?" Her voice was harsh and made me look down at my hands.
"It took us a while to be able to locate your brother, but we've found him." Mr. Guisse didn't flinch at her tone and instead matched hers.
There seemed to be obvious tension between the two as Taylor turned her head back to the side and continued to stare out of the window.
"So, Mr. Armani." Mr. Guisse said bringing the attention back on me. "We'd like to see if there could be a relationship between you and Taylor before we place her in your care."
I nodded my head and watched as Taylor turned towards Mr. Guisse.
"It seems will be a short process since your records are clear. It'll mostly be paperwork and sound all be resolved at the end of next month."
I nodded my head and turned towards Taylor who was now looking at me. "I look forward to learning more about you." I said, sticking my hand out.
"Right back at you, Big Bro." She said sarcastically, shaking my hand.
She stood up and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her."I hope she's everything you'd expect." Mr. Guisse said sarcastically. I didn't respond and instead sat up.
"The first meeting can be scheduled now if you'd like." I nodded my head and looked at the calendar on his wall.
"How about next week, on the seventh?" I asked, Mr. Guisse nodded his head before slamming his fingers down onto the keys.
"I'll make sure to email you some paper-work." Mr. Guisse said, as he stared at his computer screen.
I nodded and walked out of the office, shutting the door behind me.
I walked into the penthouse and shut the door behind me. I placed my keys on the bowl in the kitchen before loosening my tie.
"Fuck." I grunted when I fell back onto the couch.
"Harlee?" Layonna asked. I checked my watch, it was about the time she got off. My back cracked as I turned to face her.
She came to sit next to me. "How'd it go?" She asked, patting her thighs, instructing me to lay my head down on them.
I obliged."She's different." I huffed. "She looks like me." Layonna smiled, "I'm sure she does."
"She seemed messed up."
Layonna ran a hand through my hair. "You two had different upbringings." She sighed. "Hopefully after your meetings you can give her the childhood she never had."
I nodded and sighed.
Layonna bent her head downwards and kissed me on the cheek. I stared up at her.
"What?" She said.
"We aren't in middle school, you know?" I said, sitting up. "Are you too afraid to kiss me on the lips?"
"No, I'm scared of the stench that's going to come out of your mouth." She replied back.
My jaw dropped and she shoved me off her with a smile and ran into the bedroom. "Hey!" I shouted.
"I had a stressful day, I deserve to have a mouth kiss!" I said, running after her.
"Only in your dreams, Harlee Armani."
