In early 1191, the Holy Land was in the midst of war between the Crusaders and Saladin forces, but another war was fought, a secret one between the Order of the Knights Templar and the Assassin Brotherhood. In the midst of the secret war Al Mualim the master of the assassin sends Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Malik Al-Sayf and his brother Kadar to the vault beneath Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem in order to recover an important artifact. Shortly after the three Assassins discovered the main chamber, which housed the Ark of the Covenant, Robert de Sablé the Grand Master of the Knights Templar and his men appeared – unaware of their enemies – and also attempted to claim the treasure. But because of Altair's arrogance he failed to obtain the treasure from the Ark of the Covenant and was humiliated by Robert de Sablé. He then threw Altaïr from the room, and the scaffolding supporting the archway collapsed, separating Altaïr from Malik and Kadar. Which forced Altaïr to escape Solomon's Temple and return back to Masyaf in order to report the failure of his mission to his Master, Al Mualim, and upon his return to Masyaf, he was greeted by a two of his fellow Assassin's, Rauf, and Aadam.

Rauf: Altaïr! You've returned!

Aadam: Altaïr it is good to see you unharmed.

Altaïr: Rauf. Aadam.

Rauf: I trust your mission was a success?

Altaïr: Is the Master in his tower?

Rauf: Yes, yes; buried in his books as always.

Aadam: No doubt he expects you.

Altaïr: My thanks, Brothers.

Aadam: Altaïr I will walk with you I am interested in how your mission went.

Altaïr: Very well.

Rauf: Safety and peace, Altaïr. As well as you Aadam.

Altaïr: On you as well.

Aadam: Safety and peace, Rauf.

Both Altaïr and Aadam walked through the village, until they reached the Assassin fortress. There, Abbas greeted them by the inner gate.

Abbas: Ah. He returns at last.

Altaïr: Abbas.

Abbas: Where are the others? Did you ride ahead hoping to be the first one back? I know you are loathe to share the glory.

Altaïr did not reply, and a moment of silence followed.

Abbas: Silence is just another form of assent.

Altaïr: Have you nothing better to do?

Abbas: I bring word from the Master. He waits for you in the library. Best hurry. No doubt you're eager to put your tongue to his boot.

Just as Altair was going to attack Abbas, Aadam stops him by holding him back.

Altaïr: Another word and I'll put my blade to your throat.
