I hold back the tears and nod my head, unable to speak. In my room, I take deep breaths and pray before I open the letter. I need to do this on my own.
I sit on my bed, carefully open the white envelope, and take out the thick letter.
"Dear Genevieve,
I know you may hate me, and you have every right to feel that way. I don't know when you will open this letter to read it. As soon as you get it, a couple weeks, months, years, or maybe never. But if you are reading this, I hope you find it in your heart to forgive me..... They gave me 10 years....As a child, I was molested by one of my uncles, but this is no excuse for what I did to you.... When I first met you, I thought you were perfect. Beautiful, educated, Haitian, well-mannered.....I never wanted to let you go....I hurt you. I hate myself everyday for that......Pray for me...Forgive me..
