"I can't believe we won" Laurie sighed as Barnes passed her a glass of Whisky.l she immediately tossed the contents back in one gulp and smiled at him.
"Let's get you home" He smiled and pulled her to her feet. "I think I need to see that dress on the floor". He murmured into her ear smirking as she blushed and allowed him to lead her out of the bar. Laurie taking the view that maybe a holiday romance was what she needed. As they walked through the complex Bucky stiffened as he noticed that there seemed to be several men just loitering around the square. As they walked past one he noticed a earwig in his ear. Leaning down to Lauries ear he whispered one word.
"Run" As she took off the men attacked Barnes, grabbing at Laurie as she hit the stairs. Without hesitating she punched her closest attacker and got away from him. Looking for Barnes she saw he was being attacked by half a dozen men. Without hesitating she pulled off her shoes and using one as a weapon she launched herself at the nearest man, Hirt him with and then dropping the shoe so she could grab his hand as she saw a gun. She managed to bang his head into the wall making it one less. Laurie felt the breath knocked out of her as another man grabbed at her and fell with her to the ground. She hung onto his hand for grim death forcing his gun away from her. She could hear Barnes fighting but she needed to concentrate on the gun that she was slowly loosing control of, the barrel moving in her direction. Suddenly the gun exploded a loud deafening noise and she felt the heat of the bullet as it seared past her and into the back of the man Bucky was fighting. Scrambling upwards she froze and the man holding the gun slapped her sending her sprawling. Desperately she grabbed at him pulling him down on top of her and she heard the gun explode again but this time it was against her. Laurie felt time freeze for a split second she thought she was shot and then the man slumped on top of her. As she lay there she heard people running and Barnes was suddenly standing over her. He grabbed her attacker and pulled him off of her. Slowly she raised her hands and stared in horror at them. Roughly Barnes pulled her to her feet and she vaguely realised he was shouting at her. Blinking she tried to focus on what he was saying but nothing was making sense. Barnes shook her violently.
"Listen to me. Go home now" he annunciated and pushed her in the direction of her apartment. Laurie just stumbled away her hands at her mouth.
Laurie staggered into her apartment still pressing her hands to her mouth. The violence she had just witness shocked her to the core but she couldn't be anything but glad they had managed to escape. The sight of Barnes having to fight her assailants had turned her stomach but she had been the one to pull the trigger as she fought with one and somehow the bullet had missed her and hit the second attacker. Another had been lying on top of her when the gun went off. She had felt the burn of the gun as it had fired and the life drain out of the man on top of her. Barnes had simply shoved her out the fight and as ordered, she had stumbled home. Slowly she looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her body was covered in blood and she suddenly saw a different place around her and heard the sounds of fighting. Laurie staggered into the bathroom shutting the door and hid in her shower. Gasping at the pain in her abdomen as sobs started to escape from her mouth she collapsed into the corner allowing the water to just run over her.
Barnes ran along the beach front looking for Laurie. Her face had been horrified at what she had done but if she hadn't killed the man he would be the one lying at the bottom of the lagoon. He had sent her away while he dealt with the three bodies. Her staggered footprints led him back to the apartment above the bar and he lightly ran up the side stairs and quietly opened her door. Pausing for his eyes to adjust to the darkness and look for Laurie. Quietly he gave himself a moment as he looked at the closed bathroom door and the light flooding out from the door jamb. Slowly he opened the bathroom door and saw Laurie sitting huddled in the corner of her shower under the running water. Her face drawn and pale as she hugged her knees rocking slightly. Without hesitating he quietly shed his borrowed jacket and stepped inside, sitting next to her and putting an arm around her. Laurie lent into him her hands still pressed to her mouth.
"Are you cold?" He asked softly and she nodded. Very carefully he put an arm around her and reached above them with his other hand onto the showers control and turned it to warm water. Sobbing Laurie just laid her head on his shoulder and wept as he held onto her.
"Coffee" Barnes asked as Laurie padded into the kitchen, she nodded pulling nervously at her shirt sleeves. Barnes simply enveloped her in his arms "You did nothing wrong sweetheart. I promise you. We are going to be ok."
"I just watched people die how can I be ok Bucky? But" She asked baldly moving away from him. Barnes immediately moved to her side as she chewed on the side of her thumb. She quietly ran her hand down his bruises torso. "I thought they were going to kill you. I thought I was going to loose you before we even began" she whispered softly and Barnes kissed her their breakfast forgotten. Gently he carried her into the bedroom and laid her in the bed and undid her shirt and gently kissed her bruised abdomen.
"I would have given my life to protect you last night but you protected me" He murmured. "No one has ever protected me so fiercely as you did last night" carefully he kissed her throat ignoring the frown on her face as he made her gasp as his hands found her breasts and he gently rubbed her nipples making her gasp some more.
