"Hey."
"...hey there." I muttered back into the phone.
It had seemed like an eternity since I had heard the lovely melody of his voice, and my heart felt heavy with the confusion of not knowing whether I should be happy to hear it or expect nothing more than what had already become of us.
"How are you?"
"I'm...I'm good. What about you?"
"Eh, kinda bored. I'm sitting up at the airport in Seattle."
"Oh, what are you doing all the way up there?"
"Had to help a family member out. It's chill. I'm on my way back home, though."
"Well, that's cool, I suppose...it's good to hear your voice. It feels like it's been forever since I've heard it."
There was a slight pause of laughter. "Yeah, I know right? It's been a long time."
If this was to turn out as chaotic as before, I would be in a world of despair, but I found it nearly impossible to keep a wall up with him. I had said it a million times over, I knew the price I'd pay if this blew up in my face.
But to think I had been seconds from deciding it was time to move on to talking on the phone with him for the first time in six months amazed me.
Before I knew it, our conversation was carrying on until six in the morning, then seven, then eight, I eventually lost count of the hours.
"I remember when that happened! That was the night...well...if I could find another way to describe it, I would, but that was the night we got together...when we were together, that is."
There was a moment of silence before he spoke his next words. "Yeah, I'll never forget that night...it's special to me for a lot of reasons."
"...what reasons?"
"Just...reasons...but things have changed a lot since then."
I sighed, I could tell he wanted to avoid the subject of what we once were, what we could have been. "Yeah, a lot of things have."
