Past

The sun has been completely overtaken by the moon, and Jimin sits on his window ledge counting the stars in the sky. The bush nearest to the window rustles, and he cannot withhold the smile that spreads over his face, knowing already what - or who is the cause of the rustling.

He's supposed to be in bed hours ago, but he doesn't see any fun in that. His mother would surely scold him if she knew what he were up to hidden away in his bedroom.

"Jiminie?" The bush calls out, and Jimin has to clap his hands over his mouth to quiet his giggles.

"Talking bush?" He whispers back, already slipping his legs past the open window, dangling them against the house - he's not tall enough to reach the ground yet, but maybe when he turns eleven he'll be able to.

The bush laughs back at him, and only a moment later Taehyung makes his way from the shrubbery still wearing his day clothes.

He knows he shouldn't, but he can't help but look at him as he approaches - and not look at him in the way he looks at anyone else, but the way that makes his heart beat too quickly and his face feel warm. Butterflies flap wildly in his stomach as Taehyung grows closer, offering a hand to Jimin and helping him jump down.

Taehyung keeps hold of his hand even when his bare feet are firmly planted on the ground.

"You haven't put on shoes?" He asks, tilting his head at Jimin's bare feet below his nightgown, "it's a good thing that it's so warm outside, Jiminie, but be careful not to step on something sharp."

"My shoes are too loud when I climb back inside," he speaks softly, gently tugging Taehyung's hand to encourage him farther away from his house, down the dark road a bit further.

"You surely could have carried them," Taehyung swings their hands, and Jimin looks up at his side profile, backlit by the twinkling stars and the shining moon - he thinks, not for the first time, how handsome Taehyung is.

He shakes the thought from his mind, turning back to face forward just in time to stumble over a rock, kicking it as he trips and stepping too harshly on it when he lands again. It jams into his bare foot and tears spring to his eyes with an embarrassing quickness that has him sucking in a harsh breath.

Taehyung squeezes his hand, turning to face him with worried eyes.

"Are you alright?" He asks.

And Jimin nods even as his lip quivers, watching Taehyung's shoed foot kick the rock out of the way. After a short moment of Jimin trying not to cry in front of this cute boy, the older drops his hand and ducks down, offering Jimin his back.

"Here," Taehyung smiles, tipping his head back, "I'll carry you until we get to the sand."

Jimin shouldn't - that's what a girl would do, he thinks. And he already feels strangely tingly about Taehyung when he shouldn't do that either.

But the butterflies go wild in his belly and he has to, he can't think of anything worse than not climbing on Taehyung's back.

The older boy carries him slowly down the pathway, chattering away to take Jimin's mind off the pain and to fill the silence between them

"Well, it seems like my sister may be getting married, and then I will be left alone in our house to do all the chores, and mama says I should be happy for Lia, but I'm not," he heaves, carrying Jimin's whole weight, not complaining for a bit.

"Do you think that you will get married, Taehyung?" Jimin asks, voice quiet right next to his ear.

"I'm only twelve," he laughs, shaking his head, "I asked papa about it, he said when I find a girl I like so much I can't be without her, then I'll marry her."
