Taehyung presses the paper to his nose. Jimin's most recent letter still carries his scent, even after the long journey it had to make to reach Taehyung's hands. It reminds him of home, of the scent of freshly cut grass, clean laundry and ripe fruits on a summer's warm day. It smells like Jimin feels: fun, comforting, and sweet.
Taehyung is a knight in the Kingdom of Windrise, an exceptionally high-ranking one at that. He comes from a family with a long line of dragon riders and even during his childhood it was apparent he was more than fit to continue with the legacy.
Taehyung was always different from other kids, quiet, serious, and strong. It was clear in his sharp eyes that he'd inherited from his father the genetic aptitude to create a bond with a dragon, and this meant he'd be appointed to serve the kingdom.
He didn't mind, it was an honour. After struggling during his school years because of his lack of skills in magical areas such as flying, manipulating the elements, or perceiving the future, he was immensely relieved when he met his dragon and the connection was instantaneous.
Back then the thing was tiny, it had hatched out of its egg just a few days prior and Taehyung had the fortune of finding it while he explored the forest area behind the castle when the little thing fell out of its nest clumsily. After that, the long hours he'd spent training to be a knight while the other kids played around in the streets with their wands and their newly grown wings always filled him with pride.
When he presented as an alpha no one was surprised. He was a born leader and while his abilities wouldn't have been doubted if he'd happened to be another designation, this was the most fitting one for him without a doubt.
With a dragon at his side, a sword in his hand and the royal duty to protect the kingdom Taehyung thought he had everything he could ever want.
And then he met him.
It had been a tense week, rumors of war were bubbling in all corners of the castle. Taehyung's hands itched for adventure, his dragon was restless, his sword thirsty for blood, and yet Taehyung hoped there wouldn't be a real need for such violence.
"They're sending us to the front lines," he had to tell one of his squad mates, Yoongi, after a particularly sour meeting with the king and generals.
"Good. Why are you so upset? I thought dragon riders were obsessed with fighting and shit," he'd said mockingly, rubbing his sore shoulder as they walked to the stables.
"I'm not. I like flying, I like the adrenaline of it. But I hate the blood... and the pain," Taehyung says and Yoongi hums. "Don't pack, by the way. You're not coming," he adds while squaring his shoulders, anticipating what Yoongi's reaction to this news will be.
"What? What the fuck? Why not?" Yoongi argues frustratedly, he's a bigger fan of violence than Taehyung has ever been. Yoongi growls, deep in his chest, and his scent tints with anger but Taehyung takes no offence from it, he doesn't flinch and doesn't back up. This only fuels the fire burning behind the other alpha's eyes. But Taehyung is not looking for a fight so he won't be giving Yoongi one. No matter how much he tries to rile him up.
"You're still injured. You can't even lift a sword," Taehyung tells him when Yoongi stands in his way, forcing him to stop.
"Fuck you," Yoongi snarls, shoving Taehyung, causing him to stumble a few steps back. He growls again, a scowl on his face.
"Are you going to tell on me to your boyfriend? Yeah, I'm sure the omega prince would rather have me drag you to war," Taehyung teases and Yoongi's growl picks up in intensity. But the sound dies in his throat when he looks at Taehyung once more and understands the decision is final.
