VI ; Piper

Leighton unbound herself from my grasp and smiled, making deep dimples appear on her face. She wiped a tear away from her reddened eyes and pulled out a dulling terminal.

"Echo is still here, isn't it? It's almost like our ancestors did nothing whatsoever to prevent this from happening." She choked out, hesitating slightly.

"You know well that this war wasn't their fault." I whispered, remembering the things Snow Wilhelm used to tell us about the Constructors. Even though the trainee camp was somewhat honest, it was also overflowing with perfectly pointed propaganda. "Come this way, we shouldn't stir trouble here."

"Yes, ma'am." Leighton giggled, following me towards a sitting room. Small amounts of people were gathering in a feast of dry comestibles and bacteria-filled water. They were all familiar faces, but such blurry visages prevented me from seeing who exactly they were.

That is, except one.

"Is that--" I started, trembling.

"Dare Zahn. Descendant of Sky Piper Hall. Yes, that's him." Leighton muttered, both our gazes turning to the silent boy. He had pitch-black locks, with hair-ends dipped in indigo dye. His eyes radiated insolence as he sat, looking at a fading photograph of another person. "He is Urban's younger sibling, I'm sure you'd get along because of that common acquaintance."

"Better not. I want no relation with that boy, or his brother." I scowled, feeling my cheeks get hot. I looked down to my badge, resting serenely on my blazer. "People like him cannot distract us from the ultimate task."
