Wednesday Addams never cared for festivities and cheer, she despised it. Christmas time was the most detestable time of the year and the woeful girl spent most of her winter breaks locked in her room with the company of her typewriter and a bottle of stolen wine from the cellar. While her family held parties and charity galas for the freaks and outcasts of New York City, Wednesday worked in her solitude, creating a different story that transcended this mundane life.
Wednesday had planned to do this exact thing when the students of Nevermore were sent home after the chaos of the last term. For several weeks she was held up in her attic room, the only sound being that of her typewriter and the sweet sensual tune of Carmita Jiménez through her phonograph. Wednesday was working her way through her second bottle of Chateau Gruaud-Larose when the gong sounded down below, signifying the arrival of guests.
It was December 19th and The Addams Family home had been a nonstop gathering place. Individuals in and out as Morticia was planning her largest gala to date, hoping to raise more than half a million dollars for homeless occults in the city. Wednesday found her mother's charity work to be honorable, but she'd rather not be involved. The most she did for these events was play a piece on her cello, dance with her father, and drink a glass of champagne before sneaking back up to her room. Socialization is a trivial human interaction based on an egotistical need for satisfaction that Wednesday doesn't subscribe to. There is no need for gratification from others to understand her strengths.
Down the hall, the patter of fingers could be heard dancing across the floor at a high speed as Thing raced towards Wednesday's room. Throwing itself up, bringing the handle down, and swinging the door open with haste.
"Thing, what did we talk about? More knocking, less intrusion." The disembodied hand ignored her comment, going over and pulling at her clothing, beckoning her toward the door. "I'd rather not." Wednesday went back to typing, the clack of the keys echoing in the large room. Thing was persistent, pulling at the leg of Wednesday's pants. "Fine." She gave in, removing herself from her chair and following the creature down into the main part of the house.
Thing ran across the banisters and down the red-carpeted hallways in excitement, as if it were a child on Christmas morning. Wednesday rolled her eyes as they rounded the corner into the foyer. Standing at the top of the grand staircase, her eyes widened at the motley crew positioned near her front door. Enid, Ajax, and Xavier, bundled up in winter coats, were curiously looking around at the ornate frames and molding that decorated the Addams' gothic Victorian abode. Ajax was observing Lurch, the Addams Family's apathetic monstrous butler.
"What are you doing here?" Wednesday asked coolly from her place on the steps. Her three friends whipped their heads toward her direction, Enid squealing in excitement. She bounded towards Wednesday at lightning speed, skipping a few steps, to envelop her in a bone-crushing hug. Prying herself from Enid's embrace, Wednesday released Lurch from his post with a simple snap. He replied with a loud grunt, moving slowly off into the shadows of the house.
"Your mother invited us," Xavier spoke up. He looked particularly pleased to see Wednesday in her natural surroundings. The minute they had passed through the gateway of the Addams home Xavier felt her presence. The exterior of the building screamed agony, gloom, and melancholy. It had Wednesday Addams written all over it. "For her gala," He added.
"And for Christmas" Enid smiled with all of her teeth, bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet in elation.
"Well, that'll be no good," Wednesday commented. How would she ever be able to finish her novel if she had the three stooges lingering around?
"Wednesday, dear." Morticia appeared from the doorway of the parlor. "Your friends have made a long journey to be here with us for the holidays. Why not have some fun?"
