Chapter 6...

I watched as Miya sped past me, her long wavy hair trailing behind her. She turned and whispered something over her shoulder at the trees from which she had just emerged from, then stumbled on. There was no way to tell how she was feeling, her face was blank. Expressionless. Yet, I knew there was something on her mind. Nobody acts like that unless something is wrong. Just as I contemplated following her to make sure she was okay, i heard a noise coming from the direction that Miya had just fled from. Maybe something was after her. Then I realized that the noise sounded more human than animal. Friend or foe? Why would Miya be running from a friend? As it came closer, I managed to distinguish the steps of what sounded like one person. Not the heavy footfalls of a hunt party, nor the carefully measured tiptoeing of a single tracker, searching for clues as to her whereabouts.

What should I do? I know that Miya is in a vunerable state and if her pursuer had bad intentions and managed to catch up with her, then I would probably regret letting her go...

However, just as I thought this, Gayne emerged from the same cluster of  trees, his face set. Well...that helps...a bit. At least I know she’s not in any danger, but I was still concerned, so I dropped from the tall tree in which i had concealed myself, landing a couple of feet behind my uncle who, in his preoccupied state, jumped a mile.

I chuckled at his reaction. He, however continued to trudge helplessly on, so I caught up with him. ‘Sooo...what’s up with you today?’ no reply. ‘Miya passed by here, just before you did...you...you wouldn’t have been together...would you?’ A risky question, know, but it had the desired effect. He quickly glanced at me and for a brief instant looked as though he would scold me, but no such scolding came, he just kept his eyes on the ground.

This concerned me further. Gayne had often dropped by at my mother’s house in the city for food supplies, back before the raid, but it is too dangerous there for anyone not involved in the army. As my father is a soldier, she stayed-I think so that he would not starve-but I would only get in the way and would not be able to help anyway. I am too young to join the army and am not a skilled blacksmith. That’s why I came here...partly. Anyway, however many times Gayne dropped by, I never even saw him concerned. ‘Gayne are you okay? What were you and Miya talking about back there? And don’t you dare say “nothing”!’ I added. ‘I’m sorry if you don’t want to talk about it, but Miya looked...’ I trailed off. I don’t really know how she looked...petrified? horrified? Angry? Hmmmm... ‘Distraught.’ Distraught? Why? She didn’t even remotely look distraught; I suppose it was more like confused, but it got him to talk. ‘really..? well, I...we...I was...’ He looked a little uncertain, but carried on, anyway. ‘I was taking a walk and I heard a well. When I got there, Miya was drowning, so I pulled her ashore.’ He finished and it was obvious -he was not going to explain any further, nut he still hadn’t really answered my question.

‘Sooo...you saved her life?’ nod ‘and she’s running away from you? Yes?’ this is all very...odd. he didn’t reply and I got the feeling he didn’t want to talk, so we carried on walking back to Kamune in silence. If we are going to get through these difficult times, we are going to have to do it together. Arguing amongst friends won’t help any. Especially after what Hane has told me they must do, but that is a secret and I must not even think about it, in case the tulips* are listening. No, I must keep silent until the time is right. I must keep silent until it is my turn to relay the message. I must keep silent for the safety of my friends, so silent I shall stay.

Back ground information...

*’the tulips’ is a metaphor that people often use to describe the people who will do anything for information. This name was adopted after a young woman-named Tulip-agreed to live with the rebels and feed us information. After a year of spying on the rebels, she returned and was offered a position in the royal court as a reward for her work. However after another year, she had disappeared once again. Some people believe that she is actually a rebel spy and probably fed us false information, so that we would welcome her and make it easy for her to find out about the country’s plans-some believe that the King found this out and had her killed others believe she has returned to the rebel community. Another popular opinion is that the rebels have had her killed as revenge and others have gone so far to believe that the King has sent her on another mission into the rebel territory. However, nobody has heard from her since she disappeared-as far as we know-and three weeks after she disappeared the rebel armies made the biggest attack yet on the outer villages. This was the raid that occurred just over a year ago. The one in which Abat Mayflower died, along with many others.
