Chapter 11...

-Back in Kamune...-

Miya stirred awake. ‘hello?’ she peered around the room but everything was quiet so she settled back to sleep.

‘Miya?’ There it is again. Where’s it coming from? Maybe it’s just in my dream....

‘hello?’ she thought. ‘is someone there?’

‘yes, i’m here’ she recognised that voice.

‘oh...I should have known.’ She thought back. ‘do you mind interrupting my dreams?’ she joked.

‘you were dreaming about me anyway’ she wondered how he had known that, but then realised that he had just guessed...a good guess...

‘so anyway, what did you want me for?’ she asked.

He laughed ‘aren’t I allowed to just give you a social call?’ he replied.

She thought for a moment ‘yes. But you want to tell me something.’

‘you’re right, actually’

‘so..?’ she pressed

‘Hane’s told me that the King believes that the villagers are harbouring traitors and that he’ll try and smoke them out.’ His tone had become serious.

‘so it wasn’t enough to blackmail people into joining the army?..and how did Hane find this out?’

‘it seems not...and to be honest I don’t really know, but he seems worried and I think we should trust his word, because I don’t want to take risks...especially when you’re involved..’ there was a long pause.

‘okay, Gayne but how do you suppose we avoid the King? Surely he will have spies in the village. Anyway are these traitors for real, because if they are they might be able to help us, if we decide we can trust them.’ Miya was confused and did not understand how anything could possibly work out well in the end with the King involved. ‘...no possible way of escaping before he acts...’ she accidently thought the last so that Gayne could hear.

‘ahh well there we go, you catch on fast.’ Following a confused pause, he continued. ‘we should change your last statement to: no obvious way of escaping, because there have been those here who have never quite trusted the King and there are very few in this village who would offer their lives, willingly, to serve and protect him. They have always made sure there was a way to get out, if they needed it.’ There was a shocked silence.

‘so...you’re saying that I’ve been living on top of the rebellion for my whole life and never realised?’

‘no. The people in this village aren’t rebels. They’re just people who want to get away, people who don’t agree with the King but don’t want to be in the middle of a war.’

‘but, surely that’s just the same as the rebels? They are against the King and don’t want to live under his rule.’

‘True. They have the same ideas about how they think the kingdom should be run-mainly ideas about who shouldn’t be running it, except that the rebels can only be comprised of rich nobles, previous royalty, then knights and soldiers, where as the organisation you’ve been sitting on is made-up of everyone-but mainly out of skilled people.’ “skilled people..” who the hell are they? She thought to herself.
