Chapter 3:

I can hear Elime shouting something from the kitchen. ‘Gayne, I’ll be back in a sec I’m going to see what Elime’s yelling about.’ The kitchen is not too far from the living room, but I am having a good time with Gayne. He must be one of the only people that I know who do not judge me before they know me. Many people in the village assume because I am not engaged or married yet, I must be either terribly ugly or be a horrible person, however, as I get informed by those who do know me, I am neither-they could be lying to me but I cannot see why they would...

The kitchen walls echo so much, it is ridiculous! I could have been a giant beast tearing through the hallway and into the kitchen and you would not know. ‘Ahh! Someone at last has the heart to help me clear away the dishes!’ another groan...Elime was not even expected to do them, but she did and she made me do them too. I think, perhaps she has forgiven me for giving her a hard time earlier, though. Perhaps I deserve to do the dishes tonight. I could tell her to go and sit down, to enjoy the party while I finish up in here, but she will not accept...there is no point in wasting my breath. Anyway, with the two of us doing them, we will be done in ten minutes or so.

Around an hour ago, just after Tommi had arrived, clutching a small bag to his chest, upon the doorstep, my mother had hurried him into the bathroom then quickly whisked him off to show him his room and “let him settle in.” What my mother did not comprehend that, just perhaps Tommi had wanted to, at the very least, know who she was and maybe even say hello to everyone there including, I may be mistaken, but maybe he would have wanted to at least say hello to his uncle. Am I wrong? Oh well...That is my mother for you!

‘Elime?’ I heard a grunt from behind the large backside sticking out of the pantry door and took that for a “yes, dear carry on” or “Yeh, what’s up?” So I carried on: ‘Do you think I should go and ask Tommi if he would like adrink or some food or someth...’ I trailed off, as Elime retrieved her head from the small pile of boxes that line the bottom of the pantry floor. Her hair was slightly ruffled, which would have been a devastating blow if she had known, especially after all that time she spent on it this morning. At first I thought she would reprimand me for even suggesting trying to disrupt the “tired little boy,” before he was ready to be interrupted, but it seems I was wrong. Instead she headed for the kitchen counter and started fumbling around making a hot, sweet drink that is supposed to help you re-build your energy-I have my doubts about this, but it tastes good, so I do not complain-and some nice, fresh bread with a chunk of cheese and a small bowl of the stew that was left over from dinner. After lining them all neatly on a tiny tray, she thrust the whole thing at me and grunted something about which room my mother would probably have chosen for him and pushed me lightly out of the door and into the dark hallway, which lead back into the living room. I saw Gayne, as he looked up when I passed him, a slight smile on his face. I grinned back, ‘Sorry about this, I shall be back with you as soon as I can.’

‘Ohh, that’s okay. Don’t go hurrying about on my account! Taaake yourrr tiimme...’ I raised my eyebrows, whilst trying to stop myself from laughing. He winked at me and I could not hold it back, it burst free, like a dog released from its lead when the birds were about. Controlling myself, I looked back at him, to see him smiling, once again and I hurried off to deliver the tray to Tommi.

That is where I am now, well, I am going to be in a minute...I cannot, for the life of me, find where my mother has hidden the boy. Only one room left to check and...Yes! It had to be the last one I tried, did it not!!

He is peering over the arm of a small soft chair by the window, with mother no-where to be seen. 'Hey...Tommi? Are you okay?' Glancing quickly around, saw-and perhaps smelt-food and stood up. Although he is not quite my height, he is not far off, a few inches? Maybe not even that. At the sight of the tray, a wide grin had spread across his face and I chuckled at his apprarent longing for food, as I set it down on the table and stepped back. I suppose I almost expected him to pounce, but he seemed to remember that I was a stranger, a starnger that had just given him a tray full of food, but a stranger none-the-less.

I saw him momentarily straighten and look towards me. He is obviously thinking, his face is still, how people go when they are chasing thoughts around their heads. All of a sudden, he is bowing and holding out his hand to kiss my own. 'And your name is, oh bringer of the food..?' His voice is amazingly strong and polite, yet charming for, well a boy of his age and especially for someone who, just a moment ago, looked hungry enough to eat a horse, and perhaps a couple of my limbs for dessert.

'My name is Miya, Miya Mayflower,  but you can call me Miya.' I answered, offering my hand to him. Upon touching it slowly with his lips, he looked my in the eyes and said, 'well then, Miya, Miya, bringer of the food, my name is Tommi, Tommi Dagnor.'

'I am pleased to meet you Tommi Dagnor. Shal I send your uncle...s up for you while you eat a while?' I replied, courteously.

'Why, the pleasure is all mine, and if you would not mind asking them to pay me a visit, I would be extremely grateful.' He still shocks me, as to his formal, polite way of speaking, but I nodded and headed back down the hall and eventually, I reached the living room. Hane looke at me and I gestured to him, in a subtle way that would suggest-I hope-that he should visit his nephew. As it were, he glided smoothly out of the room, leaving a seat next to Gayne free, so I sat down. 'Gayne, can I ask you a question?' I enquired.

'uh-huh, fire away..'

'You don't live in the village, so where are you staying and where do you live?' yes, I know that is two questions-belive it or not, I can count!

'Uhh, well, no I don't live in the village, you got that right, I sort of live anywhere and everywhere to be honest.' The fire was starting to burn hot and everyone was starting to get very relaxed. I gave him a sideways look and he carried on. 'Well I suppose I'm sort of like...an informal messenger, so I suppose I sleep on the job really. you know, just sleeping when it gets dark, then carrying on when I wake up in the morning.'

Well now I was intrigued and wanted to know more-yes I am nosy. leave me to it! 'What kind of messages do you deliver?' I turned my whole body to face him now, so my knee was up on the chair between us. he waited a momnet, until I was still again, then glanced into my face. It was almost as if he was trying to work out if I am trustworthy enough for something. He seemed to just decided to confide in me when he stopped, looking over my shoulder, then bowed his head, looked at me and said 'customer confidentiality an' all that I'mm not 'sposed to say. Sorry.' I turned around to look at what had made Gayne change tact so abruptly. That was whenI realized that Hane had re-entered the room. Is there something they are not telling us? Is there more to the reason behind Tommi's arrival in Kamune? Well, I guess we are just gong to have to wait it out and see if the story un-folds. Oh I hate suspense....
