you glanced around the office. it was early. possibly twenty minutes before you were actually meant to clock in. but you were here anyways. there wasn't much else for you to do, after all. you didn't know where else to go this early and when you didn't know where to go, you went to the agency.

as expected, most of your coworkers weren't there yet. also, as expected, kunikida was. he did strike you as the type of guy to actually arrive an hour in advance. but seeing as he was already at the office when you arrived, you really had no idea when he had actually shown up.

kunikida sat at his desk and you at yours. however, unlike you, he was actually doing work, sorting through a couple of files or something. you only rolled a pencil back and forth along your table, idly wasting time as you waited for the others to arrive. it was much easier to make idle chatter with other members of the agency than it was with kunikida.

click. you turned towards the noise, the office door opened. it was atsushi stepping in. well he was here earlier than usual. it must have been because of yesterday. after everything that went down the day before, it's only natural to be rattled by it all. and he never even got the chance to get more information on what was going down. the first thing dazai had done when he showed up was send atsushi home.

"so you're finally back." kunikida's attention turned to atsushi and then back to you. maybe he had been waiting until the two of you both arrived to speak. "i can't believe you pulled that stunt. and at such a busy time."

"are jun'ichirō and naomi-?" atsushi spoke with a panicked look on his face. ah, so that's why he arrived here so early. now that you thought about it, since astushi had left so soon after the events transpired, he didn't see confirmation of jun'ichirō and naomi's safety. that's probably why he came to the office as quickly as he could. he wanted to see if they were okay. how kind.

"just calm down. they're both okay." kunikida continued, reading through a file on the desk.

"are you sure? really sure?" atsushi seemed unconvinced and rightfully so. the injuries they sustained weren't something any normal person is okay after. but this is the armed detective agency we're talking about. normal doesn't exactly apply.

"yes. doctor yosano is treating tanizaki next door as we speak." kunikida paused for a second after answering the question. "i head a rumor that there's a bounty for your head on the black market. it may be as high as seven billion yen by now. seven billion yen. you've moved up in the world. no wonder the port mafia wants to get their hands on you."

"seven billion yen?" atsushi echoed back, a terrified look creeping onto his features. "it's all beginning to make sense.... w-what should i do?? the mafia might attack the agency at any time!! whymewhymewhyme-"

"calm down, atsushi." you spoke up for probably the first time this morning.

"right." kunikida continued for you. "it's true that the port mafia are extremely violent, but you must keep your cool. otherwise you could wind up dead. not that i care." kunikida reverted his attention to another document he picked off his desk.

"i um- think your paper's upside down-" atsushi mumbled out awkwardly, looking to kunikida.

the glare kunikida threw at atsushi genuinely caught you off guard. it was simultaneously blank and full of emotion. he silently flipped the page right side up before setting it down on the desk and standing up. without a word he walked over to atsushi.

"I AM NOT LOOSING MY COOL OVER THE MAFIA! I'D BEAT THEM BACK! EVEN IF THEY ATTACKED THIS VERY SECOND! I'D PUNCH AND WACK AND CHIP AND CHOP!" kunikida punctuated his words with attacks at the air in front of him.
