chapter 2: longing for ghosts

~呪術廻戦~

"You ever wish you never existed? As if your existence could have only been a burden if anything?"

The older brother stared at his sister silently with identical lavender eyes.

"What are you saying Yuyu? Your mind is playing tricks on you again."

Her older brother spoke softly with an unmoving stare. He looked at her as if she was fragile and she could not tell if it pleased her or not. No one treated her this gently except for Toru. They acted as if she would shatter before their eyes any second. Looked upon her as if she was volatile enough to suddenly implode.

But was the similar caring gaze better than her mother and father who treated her as a stone?

"Never mind... Maybe Toru will be more receptive." Her little lips pouted and her childlike eyes seemed almost sad for a moment. She trusted her brother more than anything and thought he would have shared her feelings. Sayuri prepared for rejection from anyone else but Miko and Toru. She was ill-prepared for her brother to make her feel as if the feeling was irrational.

"Aye Sayuri, straighten your spine. Feelings of inadequacy are something I've moved past already. You do not want to fall behind do you?"

Determination swelled in the heiress's chest at the thought of beating her older brother. Sibling rivalry pulled her out of her grey clouds and simultaneously reassured the little girl's feelings. Her brother has also faced the same insecurities she did.

Miko was the fire behind Sayuri's eyes her entire life. He planted ambitions in his little sister's mind and tried his best to stave away symptoms of their curse.

But Miko did not know his banishment would bring Sayuri's hateful scorn to its true peak.

Sayuri did not know that one day the image of her brother she chased her entire life would go to smoke.

Cursed beyond their means were the Koki siblings.

"Where did you go, Sayu?"

Twinkling sapphires looked at her frozen state and could easily see her lack of composure. Caught in a moment of loss, she cleared her throat and rubbed her face, an attempt at grounding herself.

"You mumbled your older brother's name. Were you thinking of him?"

Satoru stared at the wild look in the lavender eyes. The feral expression she wore as she silently glanced around the balcony they stood at. But he was unsurprised when the agitated glances became hollow. Sayuri looked defeated for the first time in a long time.

Satoru did not need to ask anything more because he knew the looks in those lavender eyes. He knew what it was like to wake up and search desperately for someone who was long gone. He knew the hopeless weight that dragged her heart when she remembered once more what happened to the person she was searching for.

Long gone and no longer the same.

Yet still desperately wishing times were what they used to be.

"I was caught in a flashback of what things used to be. A moment of weakness." Her toneless voice muttered to the man beside her, eyes focused on the grey sky in front of them.

She blamed her moment on her sudden large amount of time being spent with Satoru. He and her brother were the only two she trusted at one point. Satoru's reappearance in her life reminded her of such a time.
