Lux had too many questions she wanted to ask her. She sneaked a side-glance as they walked. She was looking straight ahead. Lux watched her gaze sweep back and forth across the far perimeter of the park, her red hair catching the last scraps of the afternoon light with each step. Did she see something? Was this the way she normally patrols? Was she bored? Why was she here? Lux couldn't believe she wanted to come. Why did she come? Lux quickened her pace to keep up.
Lux: Fortun—Sarah?
She doesn't look away from the path ahead, so she kept going.
Lux: Thanks for coming. I know this was a kinda last-minute ask. Lulu draws weird stuff sometimes. A lot, actually. And the other Star Guardians from your team.....
Sarah: Ez really does have detention, Lux.
Lux: Oh. It’s cool.
She could feel the pink in her cheeks. She tugged on the tips of her gloves. Sarah turned to look at her, a smug grin softening her face.
Sarah: He wanted to be here. Soraka too, but Pantheon’s was short staffed. And tonight is Syndra’s astronomy class at the university....
Lux: And Ahri?
Sarah’s smile tightened.
Sarah: She’s been busy.
Lux: No worries.
In the middle of the park, Janna pushed Poppy and a free-loading Jinx on a squeaky merry-go-round. Lulu swayed idly in a close by swing set, its metal chains clang softly, like lonely windchimes where you were sitting. There's no one else in the park besides you.
Lux: It’s pretty quiet.
Sarah: Like you said, it’s probably nothing.
You watched Sarah walk with Lux. After the sleepover, Sarah had made more of an effort to try and help Lux figure out she needed to do. It felt a bit weird being here and doing Star Guardian stuff with Sarah again.
She looked over to you and you both locked eyes, neither making an effort to break it until Sarah needed to look forward to avoid walking into a tree. You looked down at your feet, wondering if things really could go back to how they were.
Lux took the folded slip of paper out of her pocket. The frayed edge where she tore it out of Lulu's notebook fluttered in the breeze. The shapes of the playground equipment and power lines surrounding Valoran City's metro park were clear enough, but it was the dozens of circles in the sky that worried her. Poppy said that it was too warm in physics class, and Lulu was just doodling to stay awake.
Lulu: Look!
Lulu shouted from the swing, snapping you out of your thoughts. She was at the top of the swing's arc, gesturing excitedly at the horizon. A bright spot has risen just over the silhouette of the skyline.
Lulu: Twilight star! I saw it first.
You let out a breath you didn't realize you were holding. It’s just a star. Stars can’t hurt you.
Poppy: The twilight star is not a real star. Technically it’s a planet.
Lulu: Janna said everything has starlight in it.
Janna nodded her head in agreement.
Jinx: What are you gonna wish for, Loops?
Jinx juggled Shiro and Kuro absently as the merry-go-round spun. Lulu pumped her legs on the swing, pushing it higher.
Lulu: More stars! I want to see more stars.
Jinx: But it’s not dark yet. The other stars aren’t out yet.
