                                   "We Can't"

"Get us out!" I whisper yell at Five.
"You keep yanking your hand away from me!" He responds.
"Oh, sorry." I say relaxing my hand into his grip. I hadn't even realized I was doing it.
He jumps us out of the car and we quietly run to the trees along the road and hide until the cop and Cadillac are gone.

Five takes a sip of his coffee, "Great, it's cold now."
"But we have a lead." I say taking a sip of mine.
"I hate to say I told you so, but-" Five starts.
"No you don't" I interrupt.
"You're right, I don't, but you've just wasted our time"
"No I haven't! I can see what we have to do!"
He runs his hand through his hair, "What?"
"I'll tell you when we get back to the academy." I say grabbing his hand and yanking him back towards the academy.

When we walk through the door I immediately kick my shoes off. What make Reginald think that dress shoes were appropriate attire for these kinds of activities?
"Tell me now" Five demands.
I roll my eyes, "what's the magic word?"
"Abracadabra" Five says sarcastically.
"Smart*ss." I quip.
"I'll distract the guy at the counter while you sneak onto the computer, he'll think I'm cute and that'll make it easy." I tell him.
"And that'll work?" Five asks skeptically.
"98% sure. I was running scenarios on the way home."
"Your powers are nerdy."
I smack his arm, "your haircut is nerdy."

"Just- whatever. Must be nice always knowing what people are going to say to you." Five says.
I smile, "Well not even I can figure out what Klaus is going to say."

He laughs and I can't help but smile. His dimples emerge on his cheek and his hair is all disheveled from the car still. As much as he annoys me there's no denying he's attractive.

"What about me?" Five asks
"I learned how to not see it if that's what you want to say. It's tiring and it gets boring when you can predict what someone is about to do."
"Talking to most people bores me anyway."
"And yet you never shut up."
He rolls his eyes yet again. His eyes are going to get stuck like that. "Neither do you."

I find myself take a step towards him, "Does that bore you?"
His eyes lock with mine, "I never said talking to you bored me."
My breath catches in my throat. I know he's probably going to add something to that that ruins it, "but it irritates you, right?"
"Sometimes" he runs his hand through his hair, "but I don't always mind it."
My stomach does a flip. What kind of game is he playing? His eyes dart down to my lips for a moment, so briefly I wonder if I imagined it, before going back up to my eyes.

"I'm going to go work out. Tomorrow we should go to the rental agency so we can find the driver." I say turning to leave the room and escape the tension.
He grabs my waist and spins me around to face him, "I don't understand what your doing."
"What are you doing?"
He pulls me a little closer, "What game are you trying to play with me?"
"I'm not playing games Five."

His eyes drag down to my lips again and this time I can't deny it happened. I instinctively lean towards him and surprisingly he meets my lips in the middle. His kiss is gentle, not what I would expect from Five, and seemingly as inexperienced as mine.

His hand moves up from my waist to my lower back gently pulling me closer. I can't do this. I shouldn't do this. I rest my hands on his shoulders and lightly push. Five's eyes pop open and meet mine quizzically.
"We can't do this." I say pushing his arm off my waist.
He runs his hand through his hair, "Right, that was a mistake."
"Five-" I start, but he cuts me off by leaving the room.

I sigh and enter the kitchen we're I nearly walk into Diego stuffing toast in his mouth.
"What are you doing?" He tries to say through a mouth full of food.
"When you're done do you want to spar? I need to get some energy out."
Diego swallows hard and shakes his head, "no, you always beat the pride out of me."
"I won't anticipate your moves, promise. You'll have a fair chance."
He lets out and exaggerated sigh, "Fine"
"Thank you, I need this."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. You're lucky I like you."
