A chilly surface touches my back, sending chills throughout my entire body. I groan in discomfort, groaning again when a bright light shines through my eyelids. Why won't anyone let me sleep?
I sigh to myself, blinking my eyes open and squinting into the bright white light shining down on me. Everything around me is blurry and a bright white that hurts my eyes. A blurry face appears in my vision. I blink a couple times to clear it, to find that the face is human-like, with neatly combed, short brown hair. A light-blue material covers the mouth, that hides it from me. The face stares at me briefly with dark blue eyes before glancing up at something else, the blue material bouncing up and down over his chin. I manage to make out the words that he speaks, although I cannot determine their meaning, "Subject C-h-3-e-4 seems to have awoken from the first test, starting phase two." The only words that I understood were, "C-h-3-e-4 and two" because I know my alphabet and numbers, but the rest was gibberish.
I stare up at the man above me in confusion, and as I do so, another face appears on the other side of me. This face also wears a light-blue covering over its mouth, but this face has long black hair tied back unlike the other. The new face glances at me briefly with sparkling green eyes, before looking up at the one standing beside her with a nod, speaking the words, "Let us begin."
They begin passing numerous objects over me. I watch puzzled as a cylinder container full of greenish, glowing liquid with a sharp shiny point to it is passed over me. I also noticed more flat shiny things that look sharp to the touch, and a few more cylinder containers, only these have clear liquids.
I glance around frantically in confusion, attempting to sit up only to discover tightly bound straps around my wrists that hold me to the metal table. Even my white wings lay open, strapped down at my sides. Fright crawls along my skin and I begin to struggle against the restraints, but the kicking and screaming only draws the faces towards me. I feel a slight pinch in my arm before my limbs go numb and the world begins to swirl around me.
I sit up frantically, breathing in the cool night air. A coat of sweat covers my forehead, and my breath comes out in heavy gasps; my muscles tense. I slowly uncurl my fists as the breeze rustles the dark leaves above me, then lean my head back against the tree branch, closing my eyes. It was just another nightmare, I reassure myself, listening to the chirp of crickets in the distance. I ruffle my feathers under my sweatshirt, rubbing my temple to ease the pressure.
I'm just slipping back into sleep, allowing the quiet breeze to calm me, when a twig snaps off in the distance followed by loud voices. Sitting up quickly on my branch, I peer through the leaves into the dark, allowing my night vision to take over, brightening the world around me. I soon spot a group of three tall, muscular teenage boys nearing the small clearing. The boys holler at each other, racing towards the tree I currently rest in. I shrink back into the cover of the leaves as they near, now taking in faint breaths.
Finally they hit the final stretch, and the tallest guy runs up, ahead of the group, and smacks the base of the trunk, "Ha! I win! In your face!" He shouts, as his competitors arrive, only a few feet behind each other.
"Awe man." The third teen to arrive groans, shifting the black vest he wears over his grey sweatshirt. He runs a hand through his neatly combed blonde hair, breathing heavily.
"Better pay up, Joshy boy." The second place winner, a light-brown haired teen demands, shoving the other, who nearly falls over.
"No way! That wasn't fair! You tripped me." The blonde teen- Josh- snaps back, shoving him back.
"Who said we had to be fair?" The other teen sneers, holding out his hand that Josh promptly places a crumpled five into with a growl.
"Would you two shut up." The first teen crosses his arms. He has longer black hair and wears a similar vest as Josh over a black leather jacket.
