"Wait... So your father is the guy who did all this?" I madly wave my arms around me, glaring at the girl in front of me. She nods.
"Great." I mumble sarcastically.
"Please, trust us. We can help you! What he's doing isn't right." Sarah says, glancing at Mack who seems to almost blush, fidgeting on his feet.
"Right... You are going to help us take down your father."
"Liz, come on. You're being harsh." Mack murmurs, glancing at me sideways.
"No, Mack. We don't know these people. They could be working for their "father" and just pretending. They could lead us into a trap, or worse, kill us in our sleep!" I shout, turning on Mack. He grabs my shoulders, his voice entering my head; You saw them when the devils attacked. They were terrified. Why would they be if they were working with them?
They could be faking it. I snap pushing his hands off.
Liz.. He gives me a sad look. You can read minds, you tell me if they're lying.
I glare at him, turning away with an audible 'humph' crossing my arms.
"Were you guys just talking with your eyes or something, that was kinda creepy..." Sarah's brother.. Kevin, I think, states. I just glare past him at Mack. He catches my glare.
"Uh, yes something like that." He mumbles. "Anyways. You guys honestly want to help us take down your father? Even if that means killing him." Sarah is quiet for a bit, and I dive into her thoughts, listening closely to them although it gives me a bad migraine to do so. Her thoughts are a jumbled mess, hopping from one thing to the next:
I can't believe that the man I called dad could do this..
How did we survive that attack? Those creatures were scary.
We have to make them trust us. How could they think we were working with our father! I never even see him at home. I doubt they know how hard that really is and they're going to criticize us?!
What are we even doing here. I thought I was looking for special birds, not crazy winged people!
But they can fly... They can fly right? I should ask. But they don't trust us, ugh why don't they trust us!
If we don't get them to trust us, they'll probably kill us.. I don't want to die.
I also don't like the idea of killing my father.... but he needs to be stopped and this could be the only way to do it...
"Yes. He's never been a father to us and if we can stop him from hurting anyone else, I want to try." Sarah whispers quietly after a while. "Right Kevin?"
I glance back at Kevin; a tall kid with black hair and fair skin that matches his sister's, with bright green eyes unlike his sister's hazel ones.
He nods.
I separate myself from Sarah's thoughts, diving into Kevin's, but his mind is blank and I get a sudden painful zap in my head that scares me, making me jump backwards and scream out in pain. All eyes turn to me, and I feel my cheeks become warm.
"What are you looking at? Keep talking." I mumble, crossing my arms. Sarah and Kevin shrug, continuing with the conversation, but Mack's eyes stay on me.
You alright? What happened? His voice appears in my head.
I don't know. I send back, a serious migraine now at the back of my head and I rub my temples. When I tried to read Kevin's mind, it was blank. Then it like.. zapped me. Mack, I don't trust him.
What about Sarah?
She wants us to trust her.. but I'm not sure I do. I mumble back.
If she wants us to trust her, then I don't see why we shouldn't, Liz.
I groan inwardly, shaking my head. Fine, but I still don't trust them.
"Okay, guys. Tell us what you know." Mack suggests, glancing back at Sarah. Sarah smiles, and her thoughts tell me she is relieved that we finally trust her.
"Well, we don't have much.. but we know that most of the sightings of giant birds and children going missing happens in California- here."
"So we are in California. You were right, Cheer." Dylan speaks up from where he stands leaning against the side of the building, arms crossed.
I ignore him, feeling his aggravation and glance at Sarah. "Wait, did you say children were going missing?"
"Yea.. California has the highest number of missing children than any other state." Sarah replies, frowning.
"That means the lab could still be testing on children.. There could be some still held captive." I state, rubbing my temples.
"You can't possibly be thinking about trying to sneak back into that place, are you? We barely escaped last time and my father had to help us." Mack growls a bit, the thought of his father still alive making him uneasy.
"Wait, your father works for my father's company too?" Sarah butts in.
"It's a long story.." Mack grumbles, glaring at the ground.
"But he helped you..?" Sarah continues.
"I just mean, we can't go and destroy the lab because there are still innocents in there.." I cut in, trying to divert the conversation from Mack's father.
"Yeah, okay. That makes sense." Mack replies quietly.
"Ugh, guys. Can we please talk about this later and somewhere else. This place gives me the creeps since we just got attacked here.." Dylan mumbles. "Plus I'm tired and hungry." He adds.
"We should grab some stuff from the gas station." I suggest
"You mean steal?" Sarah asks staring at me.
"Yes." I say, turning away. The devil's attack shattered the glass windows of the gas station and I pick my way over it, stepping inside the building. I am soon joined by Dylan and Mack, but Sarah and Kevin stay outside. We grab waters and snacks, and even a change of clothing. I pick out a nice pair of jeans and a red t-shirt and a black hoodie, only cutting holes in the t-shirt to let my wings through and slip the hoodie over top to hide them. I don't like the idea of Sarah and Kevin seeing them. They don't seem trustworthy. Sarah maybe, but not Kevin. I'm quietly tying my hair back when a hand grabs my shoulder and turns me around, hard. Mack's worried face stares down at me.
"Mack? What's wrong?" I ask quickly, becoming more alert and listening for noise. Mack holds up more feathers to me and I shutter a bit.
"I know I've only had wings for a little while, but I still know it's not normal to be loosing this many feathers, Liz." Mack tells me, concern in his voice.
I shake my head, giving him a 'nah' look and turning back around to finish tying up my hair.
"Liz. Show me your wings." Mack demands. I clamp my teeth together. "Liz." Mack starts again.
"No." I cut him off, walking off, but he grabs my arm, holding me there. Before, when he was human, I could easily get away, but now that he's not... He's as strong as me and I struggle to free myself from his grasp.
"I'm not going to let go until you show me."
I sigh quietly and stop struggling, standing limply with my head down. Slowly, Mack releases his grip on my arm and I pull the hoodie over my head, holding my wings out so he can see them better. I hear a loud gasp behind me and squeeze my eyes shut, knowing exactly what he's seeing.
My broken wing. It never healed, and is now just bone with only a few feathers still hanging on that have yet to fall off.
