Chpt. 2.)
PRINCE KYLANDER HAS RETURNEDKyah couldn't breathe. He was the lost prince? The Kylander? No. No. No. No.
But... yes.
He was never told much about the royal family. Nix liked to keep quiet about it as it was a dark time for him, but now Kyah wasn't so sure that was why he bit his tongue.
Still, he refused to accept it. He couldn't be Kylander Sterling, prince of Mingold. He had spent his entire life with Nix, with his brother Ari, and with their mother, Faelyn.
"I can't- I can't be the prince," Kyah managed to say, despite his voice feeling very weak. Ari nodded in agreement, "Kyah's my bother, we've grown up together."
Samuelle smiled softly at the boys, "if you're so sure, then why does Kyah look so differently from you, Nix, or Faelyn? All of you have dark hair, a dominant gene. Kyah, you have blonde, a recessive gene. It is impossible unless someone far back in your family lineage, Ari, had blonde hair."
Kyah's head spun, it couldn't be true. It couldn't be. That would mean his parents- or not parents- lied to him, that Ari wasn't his real brother, that he forgot his real family, and most importantly, he was a target for a far too empowered vindictive king.
"It is true, dear boy. You look bloody identical to the late king and queen," Quill spat, still having trouble comprehending the razor-sharp resemblance Kyah had to them.
Heavy hoof beats broke up the conversation, a heated Nix dismounted Dragon. He looked furious, "what did I tell you two never to do!?"
Kyah and Ari exchanged nervous yet determined glances; they wanted to know. Kyah gulped, putting on a strong face and locking eyes with Nix.
"Is it true?"
Nix's usual tan complexion paled to that of paper, his eyes widened to the size of saucers, and he looked ready to faint. That was all the answer Kyah needed, but he sought words. He needed confirmation from the very man, the only man, that would fully know.
"Is, is what true?" Nix's voice broke. In all the boys' years they had never heard Nix's voice crack. The truth shadowed over them like a sharpened battle sword hanging by a sewing thread; only the pointed end fell nearer and nearer to the boys' scalps as the thread's strength began to tether.
"Am I not your r- real son? Am I Kylander Sterling, Mingold's prince?" Nix sighed, all previous anger he built up riding into town dissolved into utter defeat.
"No, you're not of my blood. You're the son of King Chamridge and Queen Anastasia, the brother of Cathleen, and the prince of Mingold. You are as you stand, Kylander Sterling."
Kyah felt lightheaded, he couldn't believe his ears, Nix's words, or the truth he now knew as a painfully long lie. He stumbled backwards, almost falling, the shock hitting him like a brick.
"Dad?" Ari questioned, his own voice unsure and soft. His face was contorted in disbelief and deep sadness, tears brimmed the corners of his green eyes.
That's when Kyah ran. He turned and sprinted through the town, stomach queasy with his- quite literally- life shattering revelation.
He was the prince.
Nix wasn't his dad. Faelyn wasn't his mom.
Ari wasn't his brother.
He had forgotten his family.
