Chpt. 16.)
A SWORD GIRLFRIEND(Mingold City)
Ari sighed, moving the dirt around with the toe of his shoe. He drew a lightning symbol, reminding him of his horse. He wondered how the brute was getting along, if he had thrown any Feather-Born or if they even still housed the horse.
He peered through his dark lashes to see the two guards leaned up against the wall dividing the city from the castle... still there.
The boy was bored beyond his imagination. The first few hours, he allowed sweet thoughts of Cathleen to distract his mind, but now, he was over it.
Ari frowned, drawing in the dirt some more- nothing in particular, just odd shapes and figures. He missed his mom and his dad.
He could picture them now, Nix cooking a homemade meal while Faelyn rested by the fire, lightly singing to herself. She had a beautiful voice, one of a nightingale, Nix had always said.
He thought of Kyah and his frown deepened. He wondered if his brother was okay, if the dragon had killed him, or if November had left him to survive in the hostile wilderness.
He liked November, but he didn't fully trust her with his brother. He shook his head, choosing to think positively instead of drown his conscious.
Ari reminisced the last weekend they had all been together. Nix had been in the kitchen, concocting some baked goodie he planned to sell in town. He had the front door open, so the boys could smell the sweetness in the air.
Kyah had been especially interested in the chocolaty smell, assuring Ari it was brownies. Faelyn had been tending to the garden when she walked by, eyeing the boys as they whispered to each other.
"Boys... you're acting mischievous." They turned to their mother, innocent smiles shone bright on their dirty faces.
They had been working in the fields most of the day, gathering crops, digging more rows to plant produce, and chopping wood for an evening fire.
"Mischievous? Us? Mom, please, we're wise, responsible boys. We wouldn't plot against a fly," Kyah said, rubbing his mother's shoulders.
She hummed, "you can lie, but you can't do it well." Kyah sheepishly grinned, wrapping his arms loosely around his mother's neck,
She brought her hands to hold onto his taunt arms, "Ari?" Ari laughed awkwardly, "yes, dearest mother?" She cocked a brow, watching him inquisitively.
He broke, groaning loudly, "ugh, fine. Kyah swears Dad's making brownies, I think he's making cookies. We bet on it, but Dad won't let us in the house because he knows we'll harm the merchandise."
Faelyn laughed, she knew all too well what harm the merchandise entailed... they have eaten entire batches of Nix's baked goods in a single sitting.
"I see. What if I distract Dad and you two discover which went to the right end of the rainbow and struck gold?"
Kyah gently spun his mother around, "actually, Mom?" She nodded, rolling her eyes at her son's smirk. She skipped into the house, sending the boys a wink before she walked into the kitchen.
"Babe, I want to dance!" She said wistfully. Kyah and Ari stayed quiet as they listened to shuffling in the kitchen before they could hear paced footsteps and movements.
They were indeed dancing. Nix knew how much Faelyn loved to dance, and he promised the day he married her to never turn away when she wanted to dance.
