I wake up early to go to my study and work.

My maids knock on my door and enter, bringing me my breakfast.

I am Alexander Atlas, king of Kyron, son of the late King Arthur and Queen Alexis.

Jackson, my best friend since childhood, enters my study. He never knocks and it never fails to annoy me. "Good morning Alex! I have news." I just know he is about to say some BS because of that smile plastered on his face, but I put up with it because his positivity is refreshing.

Jackson LePere's father was my father's right hand man and Jackson is mine. We grew up side-by-side, learning swordsmanship and how to run my kingdom. He is easygoing while I am serious.

"Today is princess Selene's 18th birthday and she enters society at a ball tonight. I frown "And that concerns me because...?" I, along with the whole world, have already known this.

Princess Selene is known everywhere for her beauty. "She is our enemy kingdom's princess. Therefore, this does not concern me. You may leave." I have too much to do today.

"You aren't married and it is starting to concern the people. Don't you want to expand the kingdom? This is your chance!" he pulls out a document from his pocket. It has a picture of her on it, along with the details of her ball.

"Where did you get this?" I ask. "I was traveling through Tasmir for a meeting with their general and saw it on his desk, so I stole it to bring to you!" Again, there is no way I will be attending. Nobody from Kyron was invited for obvious reasons. We have been on the brink of war for years. Even before I became king seven years ago, our kingdoms have always never gotten along. My reputation on the battlefield keeps people away from me in fear. I would not be welcomed in Lyria. Jackson frowns. "Please just think about it."

He finally leaves. Had it been anyone else who said anything even remotely like that to me, they would be 6 ft underground in an unmarked grave. I continue working while considering going to the ball uninvited. Damn that idiot Jackson, he has put the idea into my head that it would be a good idea to find a woman there to become future queen. And he knows he is right.

I'm 27 and have put off marriage for years now. A few brave women have traveled to my castle in the past, but I always send them home within a few days too scared to come back. Women only want me for my status and power, and it disgusts me.
