I flicked the crumpled paper ball, causing it to roll off my desk and fall into the wastebasket. My family sent me here, to Nevermore, so that I could be with more people like myself.
Someone like me doesn't get my abilities from genes, but rather from stress, and anxiety. We wish to bend the world, to make everything just feel okay.
I've never felt worse in my life.
Becoming cursed, from stress, isn't the greatest way to have fun as a teen. Sure, there are advantages, such as being able to shift reality with my mind, but the constant headaches, nausea, and anxiety don't make powers worth it.
I just got to Nevermore, and so did my roommate, Wednesday. She's not very open to new people, I see. So, as an ambivert, I'm not too bothered. I'll just spend time to myself when she's in the dorm, but I'll go out a lot. Maybe I'll visit the town of Jericho, go into some shops there. Let my extroverted side out a bit.
Wednesday and I haven't spoken much, as we arrived very recently. I got here first, and just as I was finishing my unpacking, she walked in. The sudden echo of impatience and disdain curled into every corner, filling the room with dark emotions. It was interesting, her dark eyes looking at each thing in turn, then her ebony pupils resting on me. She quickly looked back at principal Weems, then at her parents. They started talking but I zoned out, finishing up organizing.
"Zilla, will you show Wednesday around the school?" Principal Weems was now facing me, but still on the other side of the room, Wednesday's family exiting the door. I glanced at Wednesday, then got up from my bed and shuffled over to the door. The best way to make friends, I think, is to match their energy when you first meet them. Wednesday did not seem in the mood for a conversation, let alone making any friends.
"Hello, I'm Zilla. Your roommate, don't worry I don't bite." I said warily, with a small smile forced onto my face
"I do." Wednesday spit back, tension in her voice.
I scoffed "Yeah, ok. Let me show you around school."

"There are 4 main cliques. Furs, Fangs, Scales, and Stoners. Don't worry- not like the drug." I said quickly, laughing to myself. We walked into the courtyard, Wednesday taking slow, silent steps. "Furs are werewolves, fangs are vampires, stoners are gorgons, and scales are-"
"Scales are sirens." Wednesday said, her tone hushed, unimpressed.
"Yep." I continued walking on the stone pathway before leaning against a wall. Headache. I closed my eyes and shook my head slowly. When I opened them again, Wednesday was standing in front of me, looking at a mural on the wall.
"Those who dream by day are cognisant of many things which escape those who dream only by night" she murmured, studying the quote carefully.
"Edger Allen Poe, he's kinda really important at this school." I mused, admiring the artistic talent. Wednesday had started walking away, so I caught up with her, annoyed. "We should go see your family now, they're probably leaving soon."
She rolled her eyes "Good, that means I can leave sooner."
"It's harder to escape Nevermore then you think, I got here earlier today and I didn't even make it to town." I huffed.
A feeling of enjoyment prickled in Wednesday's eyes. "So.. you want to escape too?"
"More then ever." Wednesday nodded slowly, I could feel her thoughts brewing. "Alright, you should go say goodbye to your family."

By the time Wednesday got back to our room, it was dark. I was now laying on my bed, reading, when she walked into the room and pulled out a typewriter. I threw myself off the bed and shoved on my slippers. "You like to write?" She stayed silent, her cold eyes on the keyboard in front of her. I shrugged and opened the big window, climbing onto the roof.
The full moon cast a silver glow onto the black shingles that covered the roof. I stood there, overlooking the dark, misty forest. I heard howls in the distance, and felt calm. I may not like it here now, but it will get better. I sat down on the cold roof, and watched the stars in the sky, as my eyes drifted, watching the bats come out to hunt. I got up to go back to my room, jumping onto the balcony.
It was then when I saw it. A monster. It was in the forest, ripping a deer to shreds. I watched in horror as the blood flowed through the grass like fish in a river. It looked up, and saw me. it's red, bloodshot eyes filled with hatred. I ran inside. Wednesday was putting away her typewriter now, she glanced at me, confused, and then looked away, getting into her bed. I turned off the light and slipped under the covers.
It can't get to me here, and besides, I probably just... imagined it. No monster could get that close to Nevermore.
My eyes soon closed, and I was thrown into sleep.
