The following day, Rodolf drove to the park to meet Giovanni near the library. He was so nervous that he almost drove through two red lights on his way there. When he parked the car, he tried to relax by breathing deeply a couple of times but it didn't help. He got out of the car eager to see Giovanni but at the same time, wanted to head back home. He wasn't sure why he was so nervous. It wasn't a date. It had the potential to be one but since he hadn't made that part clear, Rodolf wasn't sure if Giovanni had agreed to spent time with him as a date, as a friend or even out of boredom. Rodolf went to sit by a tree that allowed him to see around the area so that he could see Giovanni when he would arrive.
Giovanni arrived several minutes later. As Rodolf debated whether he should walk towards him or wait for him, Rodolf realized that he hadn't thought of a plan. By the time Giovanni got to the tree, Rodolf still didn't have much of a plan. He suggested getting smoothies at the place around the corner. Giovanni agreed.
On the way there, Rodolf tried to start a conversation about the books that Giovanni had bought at the fair. "So, were the books heavy? Sometimes books get pretty heavy."
A little confused by what Rodolf said, Giovanni asked him questions about school. While they waited for their order at the smoothie counter, they discussed courses that they were taking or had taken. When their beverages were ready, they went back to the park to drink them. They sat across from each other on the red grass.
Feeling less nervous, Rodolf said, "I'm glad you didn't bring your friend there."
Giovanni replied, "She's more someone I live with."
Disappointed, Rodolf asked, "So you are dating her?"
"No! We live in a foster home together."
"Aren't you guys a little old for that?"
"It's a home. There's no age limit."
"Right. Stupid question." Feeling stupid, Rodolf quickly changed the subject. "So, what happened to your parents?"
Giovanni responded by shrugging.
Rodolf asked, "Do you actually not know or you just don't want to tell me?"
Again, Giovanni responded with a shoulder shrug.
"All right." Rodolf felt like he was screwing things up with Giovanni. Unexpectedly, even to himself, he asked, "Want to see something cool?" Rodolf opened his hand palm up to show three very small balls of white light circling above his palm.
"Neat trick."
"Thank you. I use it to impress men at bars. So far, it hasn't helped and I just get drinks thrown in my face."
Giovanni laughed. "Want to see something even cooler?"
Within seconds, the circling white balls became a red, a blue and a green ball of light.
Surprised, Rodolf said, "Did you really just do that? That's awesome."
"You're easily impressed."
"Sometimes. Is that your thing? Changing the colour of the light we see?"
"Oh, I can do a lot more than that."
"Okay, let's see it."
"Nope. What else can you do?"
"I don't want to show you everything now. I need to keep some mystery. You'll just have to wait."
Giovanni responded with a smile, "Don't keep me waiting too long."
The two of them spent the next hour discussing various subjects. They spoke about the books and the movies that they enjoyed in their childhood and in the past several years. Eventually, Giovanni got a message on his device and had to leave.
Andy stood by the green door of Milli's large ivory white house. Sasha let Andy into the house. Andy walked through the hallway which had desert sand brown walls and a wooden floor of a darker shade. The walls by the living room's entrance were covered in pictures of Milli, her family members, her friends, and each child that had ever lived with her. Farther to Andy's right was the dining room. It had a glass table large enough to comfortably seat twelve people on the wooden chairs around it. A large metal chandelier hung over the table. Sasha had told him that it was strongly supported by a pole attached to the roof of the house. He had joked that if a miniature tornado travelled trough the main floor, the chandelier would be one of the few things to survive. Andy didn't believe it but it prevented him from worrying that the luster would fall on them during meals. The kitchen was beside the beige painted dining room. Following Sasha down the hallway, Andy stopped at the ramp going to the second floor. To his right, the hallway continued and led to the library room and a ramp going into the basement. Andy had hoped that they would play in the basement that day. The game console in the basement was hooked to a projector making the whole back wall a screen for their game. However, that day, they were going to play in Sasha's room on the second floor.
