i still couldn't believe what i was looking at. nadine was sitting next to me on my bed, despite the fact that she was dead. it was like a weird fever dream i couldn't wake up from. since nadine only had 30 days left, i wanted to know what she would like to do with her time on earth. "so, nadine, what would you like to do while you're here?" i asked. "hm.. i'm not sure. i guess i would just like to hang out with you, jake, and devon." she replied.i was confused when she said that she wanted to hang about with me, jake and devon, because i thought only i could see her. "can jake and devon even see you?" i asked. she shook her head. "nope. they cannot. you are the only one who's able to see me." i nodded my head. "so if jake and devon saw me talking to you right now?" i waited for her response. "they'd think you were insane." "got it." i started to think about things we could do, when an idea came to mind. "ooh, we could go to the amusement park today, would you want to do that?" i asked. "oh my gosh of course i would! i haven't been since i was a little kid. i always loved the farris wheels." she smiled, and i smiled back. "we can go to six flags, if you want?"
"you don't even have to ask. i was banned for life when i threw up on the el toro.. and the farris wheel.. and the spinning tea cups." she admitted. i laughed. "you threw up on the farris wheel and the tea cups?" i asked in disbelief. "what?? i had a lot of funnel cake that day." she laughed. just as i was about to get up, jake walked into my room.
he looked around confused, as if he was looking for somebody else. he glanced a little longer, then realized he just barged into my room without knocking. "sorry, should've knocked." he then walked out of my room, closed the door, and then knocked. i laughed. "come in!" i said. he walked in and sat in the chair next to my desktop. "who were you talking to, by the way?" he asked.
i awkwardly glanced at nadine, and she gave me a confused shrug. i glanced back over at jake and quickly gave an explanation. "oh, yeah, i was just talking to myself. sometimes i just like to narrate things to myself, you know?" i said, hoping he would buy it, and he did. "yeah, i do that too sometimes. just wanted to make sure. you had me worried for a sec." he replied, and i awkwardly laughed.
"i was actually just about to ask if you and devon wanted to come to six flags with me? i feel like we deserve to take our minds off of everything that's happened." i said. it's true, i did feel like we deserved a break, even if everything that happened was following me from the grave. "um.. yeah? who would say no to six flags? let me ask devon if he wants to come." jake said. "okay, cool." i laughed. "say hi to devon for me!" nadine yelled as he walked out the door. "you know he can't hear you, right?" i asked. "yeah, i know, i just wish he could." nadine replied. i looked down at my bouncing leg. "me too."
i wanted to put together a really cute outfit for six flags, and i wanted nadine's help picking out an outfit. i pulled nadine to my closet, and had her help me pick something out.
"what about this? this is cute, right?" i asked, pulling out a plain t shirt and a pair of jeans. nadine stared at it for a moment, then shook her head. "nah, it's too boring. you're lexy cross, you can do way better than that." she said. after about 15 minutes of going back and forth, we finally picked out an outfit we both thought was me, but was also something i had never really tried before:
"ooh, that's super cute!" nadine exclaimed. "it really is, thanks for helping me pick it out." i said. "mhm!"
she walked around my room for a bit, then an idea hit her. "can i pick out an outfit, too?" she asked. "of course, have at it! any clothes of mine are yours now." i smiled. she then started to quickly rummage through all of my clothes, until she found an outfit she loved:
"i love it so much!" nadine exclaimed. "it really suits you! are we ready to hit the road?" i asked, motioning for the door. she nodded her head, and we headed out the door.
we got all of our things together and we were ready to hit the road. we didn't bring much though. just one giant bag filled with water bottles and my polaroid camera. i loaded the bag in the back of the car, and closed the door shut. it took some convincing, but my mom agreed to take us all there.
jake sat on the end seat, devon sat in the middle seat, and i sat on the other end seat. caroline didn't go because she didn't feel like it, and my mom felt that caroline was old enough to be by herself for the day, so she just stayed home. as for nadine, she was a ghost, so she didnt really need a seat. she sat in the very back of the car with the bag full of water.
nadine playfully peeked her head up from behind the seats and waved at me. i gave her a slight smile, but didn't wave back, because jake and devon would be confused if i did.
"hi lexyyy" nadine smiled. i mouthed the word "hi" back, but didn't actually say it. jake and devon didn't see it because they were too busy taking turns playing angry birds.
"are you kids ready to hit the road?" michelle asked, buckling her seat belt. "yes, mrs. cross" jake and devon said in sync. "yes, mom." i added. "yes, lexy's mom." nadine added. "alright let's go, make sure to buckle your seat belts." michelle said as they drove away.
AN: ANDDDD THATS IT FOR THIS CHAPTERRRR. i'm so excited to write the rest of this book it's gonna be so good 🤭
