=============

The golden mask, shaped like a barn owl, peers into the old tree hollow.

Dusty cobwebs, dried leaves, a light purple envelope...

Wait! A letter!

His eyes widen, a small grin already beginning to grow on his lips as the golden guard sticks his hand into the tree and pulls out the envelope, his gloved hands brushing against the rough bark briefly.

He examines the letter. It is colored lavender, and in silver letters were the words Birdbrain on the front. A chuckle escapes his lips as he says under his breath whilst removing the parchment from its envelope, "So they're sticking with that nickname, are they?"

The parchment crinkles under his touch as his eyes skim the words.

Dear Birdbrains,

Thank you, thank you for lending me the book, Titan To Island! It was such an interesting read, especially the part where the Titan's carcass was halfway turning to nature already. The history of the Boiling Isles is rather fascinating, don't you think?

Anyhow, my second team meeting went well. Arley and Vannie have been blushing at each other a lot, do you think that they both have a crush on each other? I think so — even Ren believes it, and he's been friends with them much longer than I've been!

How's the coven? Are you sleeping well, eating enough? Hopefully you're doing alright, and that it hasn't been stressing you out.

I'd love for us to meet up soon. I will be in our special spot tomorrow, as it will be a sunday. 'Studying', of course, but I'd appreciate it if you showed up, but if you can't, that's alright.

Love,

Minty

His smile deepens the longer he reads the letter, and when he finishes he clutches the parchment to his chest, like the Disney princess he was.

It hurt to smile so much, but he didn't care. He quickly skims the letter again before pocketing it into his cloak.

It was like (reader) had a grip on his emotions! They could do something so simple, like write him a friendly letter, and that was all he would think about all day! It was a little foolish, wasn't it? That they could change how he felt with a simple letter?

"Sir, we've caught the rogue griffin, and — uh, what are you doing?" the captain emerges from the leaves of orange, carrying her staff. Quickly, the golden guard spins around, hands around his back, "Nothing! You saw nothing! Uh, ehem." he quickly shifts into a more professional stance, clearing his throat as he begins again, "Great news, captain. Are we all dismissed now?"

"I dunno. You're the one who's leading this mission, are you not?" she counters, suspicion lacing her tone.

"Erm, right. Well, everyone's dismissed and can go to their next mission now. Good day." the captain maybe would have added something else, but the golden guard walks past her.

When he's under the shaded trees, walking back to his group, he breathes a sigh of relief.

He couldn't let his coven know he was contacting someone outside of the castle, not with the strict regulations about communication for personal reasons. Usually, this was already a given for Hunter.

But that was before he had met (reader).

He glances back to the tree hollow, a mild smile returning on his lips. The golden guard can see the cloaked figures of his scout group.
